ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IUPUI women's soccer team will enter the 2022 #HLWSOC Tournament as the No. 6 seed and face No. 3 Oakland (8-3-7) on the road at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 30). Sunday's contest will be broadcast on ESPN+. With a win, IUPUI would advance to the semifinals round and would face top-seeded Milwaukee on the road on Thursday (Nov. 3).
Defensively, IUPUI was stingy all season long, tying the school record with 10 shutouts to date. Redshirt sophomore
Ashton Kudlo was strong in goal with a 0.79 goals against average and a 7-1-6 record. In front of her, senior
Maya Turner led the team in minutes played and proved to be one of the league's top backs. Freshman
Kailyn Smith and sophomore
Makenna Collins also contributed to the defensive core.
Offensively, senior
Maya Lacognato was voted First Team All-League after closing the regular season with seven goals and three assists and junior
Sam Slimak was voted to the second team with three goals, two assists and a league leading 54 shot attempts. Fellow junior
Emma Antoine closed the regular season with five scores and freshman midfielder
Emma Frey, who was selected to the league's All-Freshman Team, chimed in with three goals and two assists.
Junior
Carlie Werner also scored two goals and Collins and freshman
Sarah Henson have a team-high three assists. Eight different IUPUI players had at least one score and 13 Jags tallied at least one point.
POSTSEASON AWARDS
Maya Lacognato, Sam Slimak and Emma Frey all earned All-Horizon League honors, as announced on Friday (Oct. 28).
Lacognato and Slimak were also voted to the Horizon League's All-Academic Team.
SCOUTING OAKLAND
Oakland closed the regular season at 8-3-7 overall and 3-2-3 in eight home contests. The Golden Grizzlies finished the regular season on a roll, winning five of their final six contests of the year with four shutouts in that span. Alexa Sabbagh leads Oakland with five goals and 11 points and Carmela Barro has three goals. Sami Lopez has a team-high six assists and Sophie Wilsey was the league's Defensive Player of the Year after scoring three goals from her defensive post. In goal, Noemi Stadelmann started 17 of the team's 18 games, registering a 0.43 goals against average with eight shutouts.
INSIDE THE SERIES
IUPUI is just 3-19-1 all-time against Oakland and has not defeated the Golden Grizzlies since October 2009. IUPUI's lone road win in the season was a 3-1 victory in October 2008. The two teams played to a 0-0 draw in Indianapolis back on Oct. 1, 2022, of this season.
