FINNEGAN, HACKAA FUEL 4-2 ROAD WIN AT OAKLAND

IUPUI (4-5-5, 3-1-3 HL) earns first road win at Oakland since 1999

ROCHESTER, Mich. - IUPUI junior Logan Finnegan scored a pair of goals and added an assist and classmate Lukas Hackaa had three assists and a score as the IUPUI men's soccer team collected a monumental 4-2 win at Oakland on Saturday (Oct. 22). The win was IUPUI's third straight and was the Jaguars first road win at Oakland since 1999. Oakland, which had yielded just three goals in six Horizon League games, saw the Jaguars match that total in the opening 35 minutes of Saturday's contest.

IUPUI (4-5-5, 3-1-3 HL) added some late insurance to help seal three key road points.

"This was a great team win. I'm grateful for my coaches for putting in tons of time and energy to make sure we are 100 percent prepared for this game tactically," Finnegan said. "It was a great performance for all who got in. Everyone brought what we needed to win - special shoutout to Lukas with three assists. Now we're onto the next."

"It's a massive result for us, obviously," head coach Sid van Druenen said. "It's not necessarily a result that everybody else expects us to get. We've been good on the road the whole season, especially in conference, and today was no different."

IUPUI wasted little time in building a lead as Finnegan headed home a Hackaa cross for the game's first goal in the fifth minute. Freshman Dominic Breidenbach helped play Hackaa into space before the midfielder bent a cross to Finnegan at the back post.

Oakland (3-9-3, 3-2-2 HL) pulled even in the ninth minute when Owen Smith drove a free kick past the IUPUI wall and just inside the post for his second score of the year.

IUPUI regained the lead in the 24th minute when freshman Josemir Gomez headed a Hackaa corner kick past OU goalkeeper Michael Sly Jr. for a 2-1 lead. The offense continued firing as Finnegan scored the eventual game-winner in the 35th minute off assists from Hackaa and Kade Tepe. Finnegan capped the play by drilling a laser past Sly and inside the far post for his fifth score of the year.

Oakland cut the IUPUI lead in half in the 55th minute when Kieran Hayes scored on a penalty kick.

However, IUPUI kept Oakland at bay and added late insurance off the foot of Hackaa. Freshman Ethan Vermillion started the play by beating defenders and making his way deep inside the 18-yard box. He sent a ball to Finnegan on the opposite side, who redirected a pass in deep to Hackaa. Hackaa stayed composed and deked Sly before easily scoring for his fifth score of the year.

IUPUI finished with a 13-10 margin on shots and 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Hackaa's three assists marked the first-time in IUPUI's Division I era (1998-present) that a play has had three assists in game.

The win allowed IUPUI to leapfrog Oakland in the Horizon League standings, moving into  a tie for third-place at game's end. IUPUI will be back in action when it faces Bellarmine on Tuesday (Oct. 25) on ESPN+.
