INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball team has been picked to finish 11th in the #HLMBB Preseason Poll, as released by the league office on Wednesday (Oct. 19). Coaches, media and sports information personnel voted in this year's poll. Purdue Fort Wayne and Northern Kentucky finished tied atop the poll while reigning champion Wright State was pegged third. Detroit Mercy's Antoine Davis was named the league's Preseason Player of the Year and joined on the first team by Marques Warrick (Northern Kentucky), Jalen Moore (Oakland), Jarred Godfrey (Purdue Fort Wayne) and Dwayne Cohill (Youngstown State).
Head coach
Matt Crenshaw's team returns just two letterwinners from a season ago in sophomore
Boston Stanton III (4.7 ppg, 23 3's) and graduate student
Jonah Carrasco (4.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg). The Jaguars completely rebuilt the roster in the offseason and will rely heavily on a group of transfers this season. Crenshaw inked a pair of Division I transfers in 5-foot-11 guard
Bryce Monroe (San Diego) and 6-foot-9 grad student
Chris Osten (Northern Illinois). Monroe was the 2021 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year while at Sam Houston State, where he averaged 10.1 points and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 39 percent from the floor.
The Jaguars also added four junior college transfers in
Jlynn Counter,
Cooper Dewitt,
John Egbuta and
Daylan Hamilton. The group of true freshmen includes local products
Vincent Brady II,
Amhad Jarrard and
Armon Jarrard and highly touted prep
DJ Jackson.
Crenshaw's team will open the exhibition slate against Brescia inside the Jungle on Oct. 27. The Jags will open the regular season at Iowa State on Nov. 7 before capping the two-game trip at Drake on Nov. 9.
