JAGUARS TRIPPED UP AT WRIGHT STATE, 2-1

Freshman Abbey Renner nets her first career score in the loss

DAYTON, Ohio - The IUPUI women's soccer team's struggle to find answers continued on Sunday (Sept. 26) as the Jaguars dropped a 2-1 decision on the road at Wright State. IUPUI tallied in the game's opening minutes as freshman Abbey Renner found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career, but the host Raiders answered early and held on from there.

Head coach Chris Johnson inserted some new faces in his starting lineup, particularly in the attack, to attempt to kickstart the squad. It seemed to work as Renner scored off a Jessica Jacobs assist in the game's fourth minute to stake the Jags to a quick lead and give the Jaguars just their second goal in league play. However, the lead was short lived as Wright State tallied twice in the next 10-plus minutes to take a 2-1 lead and cap the day's offense.

Wright State's Maddie Mitchell tallied the equalizer in the tenth minute, taking assists from Destiny Johnson and Olga Massombo to get a shot past AP Woodall for her first score of the year. Just more than five minutes later, Johnson netted her fourth tally of the year for the eventual game-winner.

WSU (3-5-2, 1-1-2 HL) continued to put the heat on Woodall and the Jaguars' defense in the first half, outshooting IUPUI 10-3 and 6-3 on frame.

IUPUI leveled the run of play in the second half, relying largely on the attacking play of senior Elizabeth Bueckers on the left side. Bueckers missed wide of target in the 59th minute and later in the half, Carlie Werner and Renae Blevins misfired on attempts against WSU goalkeeper Jessika Seward.

Johnson continued to shuffle bodies down the stretch, but was unable to find a connecting combination as IUPUI was ultimately outshot 13-8 overall and 7-5 on frame. Woodall made five saves in the loss while Blevins attempted a team-high three shots off the IUPUI bench, putting all three on frame.

IUPUI will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 2 when the Jaguars take on Oakland University in Rochester at 4:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
