INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team will host crosstown foe Marian University for its 2021 home opener on Monday (Aug. 23) at 7:00 p.m. at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Monday's contest will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) describes the action.
IUPUI (0-1) is coming off a 4-3 overtime loss at Eastern Kentucky to start the year as senior attacker
Elizabeth Bueckers notched the tenth hat trick in program history. Bueckers helped IUPUI build a 2-1 halftime lead and put the Jags in front 3-2 in the 73rd minute before EKU equalized. The host Colonels then tallied the winner early in the first overtime period. Buckers upped her personal total to 15 career goals and recorded the first hat trick by an IUPUI player since November 2017. It was also the lone hat trick in all of women's college soccer on the season's opening day.
Maya Lacognato,
Abbey Renner and
Sam Slimak all collected assists in the loss. Defensively, head coach
Chris Johnson had two true freshmen making starts in their debuts as both
Makenna Collins and
Hannah Roberson were among the starting unit. Renner also saw considerable time in the defensive third off the IUPUI bench. Sophomore
Leah Shumate was also awarded her first career start at a defensive midfield spot.
QUOTABLE
"I think we've been really good at getting it done in the finishing third. We scored as many goals in the run of play today as we did all last spring season," Bueckers said after the Jags tallied three in the opener. "We're struggling with experience in the back line as three out of four defenders going into overtime were freshmen."
PRESEASON POLLS
