MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The IUPUI women's soccer team was unable to recapture the magic as the No. 3 Jaguars fell to No. 2 Milwaukee in the semifinals round of the Horizon League Tournament on Sunday (Apr. 11), 3-0. The Jags defeated Milwaukee on the road earlier in the season to snap some impressive Panther winning streaks, but were unable to replicate the effort to advance to the Horizon League Championship match.
With the win, Milwaukee will face top-seeded Northern Kentucky next Saturday in Highland Heights, Ky.
Milwaukee (8-1-0) got goals from Natalie Auble, Rachel Phillpotts and Jelena Sever and a shutout in goal from Elaina LaMacchia to earn the win. The host Panthers outshot the Jaguars 19-5 overall and 12-2 on goal while maintaining 56 percent of the game's possession.
However, IUPUI's first shot attempt of the game was a golden opportunity as
Natalie McNally snuck an attempt past MKE goalkeeper Elaina LaMacchia, only to see it cleared off the line by defender Gaby Schwartz.
At the other end, the IUPUI defense was subjected to an early Milwaukee offensive storm, ultimately resulting in the game's first goal in the 17th minute. Schwartz sent a corner kick towards the far post and the Jags were unable to clear the ball. Maggy Henschler regained possession for the hosts and tapped a pass to Auble, who rifled a shot just inside the post and past a diving
AP Woodall.
It marked the first goal yielded by the IUPUI defense on the road this season.
IUPUI had another pivotal scoring chance go awry in the 28th minute when
Miranda Ricks had an initial header ping off the right post and back on the field of play. On the rebound attempt, Ricks fired high of frame.
The game turned midway through the second half when the Panthers built a two-goal advantage. This time Schwartz delivered another corner kick to the far post and Phillpotts headed home her fourth tally of the year in the 69th minute. The hosts added late insurance when Sever capitalized on a restart opportunity that began at midfield.
IUPUI was limited to just two second half shot attempts, neither of which were particularly dangerous. Senior
Valentine Pursey had a shot attempt blocked in the 53rd minute and sophomore
Maya Lacognato put a shot on frame in the 77th minute that LaMacchia easily stopped.
