JAGS BEAT YOUNGSTOWN STATE TO WIN FIFTH-STRAIGHT GAME

IUPUI beat the Penguins thanks to a strong second half defensive performance.

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's basketball closed out its regular season home schedule with a 64-53 win over Youngstown State. Three Jags finished in double figures in the victory.

Rachel McLimore led the way for IUPUI (13-4, 11-3 Horizon) with 18 points going 3-for-4 from deep. Macee Williams filled the stat sheet again with 15 points, 12 rebounds and a team-high five assists. Destiny Perkins finished the game with 13 points and two steals.

The Jags trailed at halftime for the second-straight game but the defense showed up in the second half, holding Youngstown State (8-6, 8-6 Horizon) to just 15 points and 23 percent in the second half. IUPUI held the Penguins to just 19 percent shooting in the final quarter as the Jags completed the comeback win.

"Extremely proud of our team really locking in defensively in the second half and finding a way to win," said head coach Austin Parkinson. "Our veterans continue to lead us and step up in different situations. We have a special group of seniors and they deserved to win their last game in the Jungle."

After leading by three after the first quarter, IUPUI managed just seven points in the second, falling behind 38-30 at the break. Halfway through the third, IUPUI was down 11 after a layup by Mary Dunn but the Jags started to chip away at the lead.

Perkins and Allen both hit buckets and Allen would later hit three free throws to cut the lead to five with just over a minute to play in the quarter. A three by McLimore with 36 seconds left pulled IUPUI within two.

IUPIU continued what would be an 18-3 run from 3:42 in the third quarter to 2:13 left in the fourth to close out the game. Williams started the quarter with a free throw and O'Reilly added two before the Penguins scored their lone basket during the run to take the lead back at 48-47.

From there, IUPUI continued to dominate inside. McLimore hit a layup to put the Jags back up and completed the three-point play giving IUPUI the 50-48 lead. On the Jags next possession Willimas hit a layup to put IUPUI up four.

Neither team would score for almost two minutes before O'Reilly hit another layup and after a turnover by Youngstown State, Williams pushed IUPUI's lead to eight. A three from Youngstown cut the lead to five but Williams found a driving O'Reilly who finished with a layup and completed a three-point play getting the Jags back up eight. Perkins helped IUPUI ice the game at the free throw line, hitting three free throws down the stretch.

After not doing much inside during the first half, IUPUI got back to getting in to the paint which in turn got the Jags to the free throw line. IUPUI finished the game 17-for-23 from the stripe including going 13-for-17 in the second half and 8-for-10 in the fourth quarter.

The Jags managed to own the boards, outrebounding Youngstown State 38-26 and 10-4 on the offensive end.

IUPUI will now wait to see where it will fall in the seeding for the Horizon League Tournament.
