INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI swimming and diving team continued the House of Champions Invitational on Friday. Day two of the invitational was highlighted by Spencer Jyawook breaking the IUPUI and meet record for the men's 100 butterfly in prelims (47.22) then breaking his own record in the finals with a time of 46.85 to seal a first-place finish in the event. Logan Kelly also set a new Jaguar record in the men's 100 breast with a time of 53.25 in the prelim round.
The Jags had 29 athletes qualify in the first half of the day for the finals session. After the prelims,
Sadie Smith took fourth place in the women's 1 mtr diving with a score of 246.55.
During the finals session IUPUI sealed two first place finishes. Jyawook earned the first-place finish in the men's 100 butterfly.
"Coming off the wall, I felt clean and from the start I just felt perfect," said Jyawook. "When I race, in the last ten yards, I don't think about who's next to me, I'm just focused on getting my hands on the wall and finishing the race."
Jason Harary also earned a close first place finish in the men's 400 IM with the sixth fastest time in school history, 3:57.58. Luke Dibley placed third in the 400 IM (3:58.92), Nick Dibley earned fifth (4:00.38) and Spencer Koehrn placed seventh (4:05.68).
The IUPUI men's 200 medley relay team, Riley Lohse, Logan Kelly, Spencer Jyawook and Kevin Burke, earned a second-place finish with a time of 1:28.06. The women's 200 medley relay team,
Lauren Thompson,
Jenna Nethercutt,
Caylee Hamilton and
Avery Brooks, finished fourth with a time of 1:43.86.
During prelims, Logan Kelly set a new IUPUI record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 53.25 and ultimately placed third during the finals session with a time of 53.46.
Other top finishes came from
Caylee Hamilton with a fourth-place finish in the women's 100 butterfly (55.80) and Kevin Burke with a fifth-place finish in the men's 100 butterfly (48.94).
Head coach
Damion Dennis was impressed with his team from start to finish. "This was overall one of the best nights, collectively as a team in a championship type format with a prelim and finals session in my tenure as a coach here," said Dennis. "The kids were locked in and competed really well in both sessions."
Overall, the Jags are currently in second place in the men's competition with a score of 830.5 behind UIndy with 986.5. The women's team is in sixth with 423 points.
