INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI Athletics Department and head basketball coach
Matt Crenshaw announced the addition of a fifth signee during the recently completed early signing period. Junior college transfer
Kharye Cayne, a 6-foot-10 forward, signed his letter of intent to join the Jaguars, beginning next season. Cayne, a Raleigh, N.C.-native, is playing this season at USC Salkehatchie in Walterboro, S.C.
Last season at USC Salk, he averaged 7.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game while shooting 61 percent from the floor and 46 percent from three-point range. However, his impact was greatest on the defensive end where he ranked among the nation's leaders at 4.5 blocked shots per game. He had five double-digit scoring games and seven games with 10 rebounds or better. Cayne had three double-doubles, including a career-high 19 points (9-10 FG) and 15 boards in a March 26 victory. His most intriguing double-double of the season came against Brunswick Community College when he finished with seven points, 10 boards and 12 blocked shots.Â
Cayne was invited to the All-American JUCO Showcase in Atlanta in July 2021, playing alongside the top junior college players in the country. He spent his first season at renowned powerhouse Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College where he redshirted.Â
Â
"Kharye is an elite level shot blocker. He can change the game defensively and changes ends of the floor in a hurry with his ability to run the floor," Crenshaw said. "He's got soft hands and a soft touch and is really improving his game offensively.
"As you might imagine, we're excited to have him signed for next year and to get him to campus."
