INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's swimming and diving team put up a strong showing in a dual meet with Rutgers at the Natatorium on Saturday (Oct. 30). Despite falling to the Scarlet Knights by a 179-115 score, head coach
Damion Dennis was pleased with the effort and continued progress of his squad.
"Today was a lot of fun. We were able to compete against a talented Rutgers team," Dennis said. "We were able to win several events, set numerous in-season best times and even had two all-time top 10 performances. We continue to compete really well and make our presence known. It's a total team effort in the pool and on the boards.
"It's a great final meet as we go into the House of Champs."
The meet was much closer than the final score would indicate as the Jaguars piled up six individual wins in 16 events.
Emmaleigh Zietlow collected an early win in the 1000 freestyle, clocking a time of 10:36.12 to win by eight seconds. She added a second win later in the day in the 500 free with a time of 5:11.36, winning that race by nearly nine seconds.
Lauren Thompson followed Zietlow's win the in the 1000 with a win in the 100 backstroke at 57.78, finishing just ahead of Rutgers' Elen Trentin.
Emma Theobald won the 200 backstroke with an impressive showing of 2:03.41, winning by more than three seconds. She added a second individual win later in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.23, edging the second-place finisher by less than a second.
The Jags stacked up some points in the 100 breaststroke, keyed by
Jenna Nethercutt's second-place finish at 1:08.69.
Caylee Hamilton won the 50 free at 23.67, just ahead of three Rutgers swimmers in succession. She later finished second in the 100 fly at 57.11.
On the boards, two-time Horizon League Diver of the Week
Sadie Smith was second in the 1-meter with a score of 291.60 and
Isabella Smith was sixth at 221.63. Isabella moved in front of Sadie in the 3-meter event as the former had a score of 252.30 and the latter finished at 214.50.
IUPUI will next compete in its own House of Champions Invitational which it'll host inside the Natatorium on Nov. 18-20 to close out the calendar year.
