WOMEN'S SOCCER SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE WITH 2-1 LOSS AT UIC

Senior Elizabeth Bueckers tallies her seventh score of the year in the loss

CHICAGO - The IUPUI women's soccer team knew it had to collect a victory in its season finale on Wednesday night (Oct. 27) to have any chance at extending its season into the six-team Horizon League Tournament. However, the typically sturdy IUPUI defense showed some cracks as the Jaguars dropped a 2-1 outcome to UIC at Flames Field, effectively ending the campaign.

Senior striker Elizabeth Bueckers tallied an equalizer in the game's 50th minute to give a glimmer of hope, but UIC's Megan Bowman scored the game winner in the 77th minute.

UIC's Makena Shaw opened the scoring in the tenth minute, taking advantage of a errant clearance to net her first score of the year.

IUPUI (4-10-3, 3-5-2 HL) all but gift wrapped the game's first goal as senior goalkeeper AP Woodall went to drive a back pass deep out of Jaguar territory. However, the ball struck a hard charging Shaw and trickled just over the end line for the game's first score. UIC maintained the lead through halftime and outshot the Jaguars 7-5 in the opening stanza. Shaw just missed replicating the feat in the 22nd minute on a near identical play, only this time the ball traced just wide of the post.

A more determined IUPUI attack drew even in the 50th minute off some combination passing. Senior Renae Blevins sent a long lead pass up the right side to Maya Lacognato. Lacognato centered a pass to Bueckers who was making a run up the middle of the field and the Jags' top scorer redirected a shot past UIC keeper Sara Sanabria.

Playing level, the IUPUI attack kept the heat on UIC, getting quality attempts from Paige Waskom and Hannah Roberson in succession. Waskom hit her shot wide of target and Roberson had her plucked by Sanabria.

UIC (2-12-3, 2-7-2 HL) got the winner in the 77th minute as Kaitlyn Montague sent a long throw-in into the IUPUI penalty area. The long throw bounded over a group of IUPUI defenders and to the feet of Bowman, who drove a composed finish past Woodall from close range.

IUPUI final quality chance of the night came in the 80th minute when the Jaguars drew a foul just beyond the penalty area, but saw Blevins' driven restart go just wide of frame.

UIC finished with a 13-10 shot advantage and held IUPUI without a corner kick. Four different IUPUI players had a team-high two shot attempts. Woodall collected six saves in her final career game in net.

Two UIC keepers combined on four saves as Roberson had two shots on goal for the Jaguars.
