PICKERINGTON, Ohio - While most of the sports world has been sidelined with the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, some golf tournaments have recently returned to action. To-be IUPUI sophomore Preston Nanthavong showed little rust in his game recently as he carded a single round 2-under 70 at the 2020 Turnberry Cbus Collegiate to finish tied with William & Mary's Trevor Binau for medalist honors. The duo finished one shot clear of Wright State's Davis Root for the championship.

The May 29 tournament was open to all collegiate and club who were members of a team in Spring 2020, residing in Ohio.

Despite rainy, windy conditions, Nanthavong was tied atop the leaderboard at 2-under 34 at the turn and was alone in the lead after playing the back nine at even par. However, Binau, who was part of the final group, also closed at 2-under 70 as well as both collected medalist honors.

"It felt great to win this tournament because the field was pretty tough," Nanthavong said. "So many good collegiate players competed and I feel like I have a lot to prove. I felt very confident in my game leading up to the tournament and I have even more confidence now."

Nanthavong, a Groveport, Ohio-native, entered play with a history of success at Turnberry, having won medalist honors as a high school senior in October 2018. As a high schooler, he earned three straight OCC-Ohio All-League honors and was the OCC Capital Player of the Year as a senior.

As a freshman for the Jaguars this past season, he amassed a 78.33 scoring average in 12 rounds, including back-to-back season best rounds of 74 at the Invitational at Savannah Harbor.
