INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI redshirt junior guard
Marcus Burk announced on Monday (Apr. 13) plans to submit his name for the 2020 NBA Draft, while retaining his collegiate eligibility. Burk, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 21.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game this past season while connecting on 93 treys at a 38.6 percent clip in his lone season with the Jaguars.
Burk ranked No. 16 nationally in scoring this past season and tied for No. 19 in the country with 93 three-pointers. He closed the season ranked 31st among active players with 251 made treys, which was fourth among active juniors.
"First off, we as a coaching staff and program are excited and thrilled for Marcus to have this opportunity. He's a first-class young man with an incredibly bright future. Selfishly, we'd love to have him back for another year. He's one of the nation's top shooters and really has a knack for scoring and making everyone else around him better," head coach
Byron Rimm II said. "What he was able to accomplish in one season really validates what we're about as a basketball program. It shows that young men can come to IUPUI to compete at the highest level and have the opportunity to continue their careers on the professional level. He's done everything that's been asked of him athletically and academically and he's ready for the next step. I can't say enough good things about the young man and how he's represented the IUPUI basketball program."
Burk was voted to the Horizon League Second Team by the league's coaches, media and sports information personnel in his first year in the league. He was a two-time Horizon League Player of the Week and was named the CollegeInsider.com Lou Henson Award National Player of the Week on Nov. 18 after averaging 25.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game in victories over Anderson University (Nov. 11) and at South Florida (Nov. 18).
The Campbell-transfer scored in double-digits in 29 of the Jaguars' 32 games, including the final 19 games of the season. He scored 20-or-more points 19 times, including four games of 30-or-more points. His top scoring outing of the season came on the road at Oakland when he pumped in 39 points in the overtime win over the Golden Grizzlies.
Burk is seeking to become the second IUPUI player in school history to be selected in the NBA Draft, following in the footsteps of George Hill. Like Burk, Hill was a redshirt junior when he declared for the 2008 NBA Draft and was later selected in the first round by the San Antonio Spurs. Hill is currently in his 12th season in the league and was leading the NBA in three-point shooting (48.0 percent) at the time of the stoppage.
