HOT SHOOTING JAGUARS HANDLE GREEN BAY, 93-78

Jaguars hit a season-high 14 threes as Jaylen Minnett tallies a career-high 31

GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The IUPUI basketball team connected on a season-high 14 threes at a 50 percent clip as the Jaguars roared past Green Bay on the road on Sunday (Jan. 5), 93-78. Junior Jaylen Minnett led the way, scoring 21 of his career-high 31 points in the first half, and Marcus Burk tallied 27 points in the win.

Minnett connected on 8-of-15 shots and 6-of-10 from beyond the arc and Burk was 10-of-19 overall and 4-of-9 from deep.

Junior Grant Weatherford added 13 points and six rebounds and Elyjah Goss had 13 points and 17 rebounds for his third double-double in four Horizon League games. The win snapped the Jaguars' four-game skid and IUPUI (5-12, 1-3 HL) improved to 5-0 against the Phoenix since joining the Horizon League prior to the 2017-18 campaign.

Weatherford, who made a career-high five treys in last year's home win over Green Bay, connected on 3-of-5 triples on Sunday.

"The guys were so determined to get this win," head coach Byron Rimm II said. "They felt they let three games go. Each game we lost, we corrected our mistakes, whether it was free throws, rebounds or defense. They work very hard in practice and the day of the game. Plus, it helps when two of the top shooters in the conference score 31 and 27. Those two guys bring a lot of confidence to our program.

"And to top it off, (Goss) with another big double-double."

"It always feels good when I can get going and it helps elevating our team play," Minnett said. "When we make the game easy and have fun, we play great basketball. This is a big time win against a great team and we have to be focused to face the rest of the great teams in the league."

P.J. Pipes led Green Bay with 18 points, all from three-point range, and Manny Patterson and Josh McNair closed with 12 apiece.

IUPUI wasted little time in taking control early, outscoring Green Bay (7-10, 2-2 HL) 16-4 in the game's opening five-plus minutes, largely behind six points from Goss on the inside and early treys from Minnett and Burk. Green Bay snuck within seven at 26-19, but IUPUI fired back with a 10-2 run capped by a Zo Tyson layup to build a 15-point lead. The Jags led by as many as 18 in the first half before ultimately going to the locker room with a season-high 53 points and a 15-point lead.

The intermission did little to extinguish the Jaguars' torrid play as Burk scored the game's first six points of the second half to push the lead beyond 20. IUPUI matched seemingly every Green Bay bucket, building a 25-point lead with just more than eight minutes to play before the hosts closed the game by outscoring IUPUI 15-5 to tighten the final margin.

The Jaguars put together their most effective all around performance of the season, shooting 48 percent from the field while holding Green Bay to just 39 percent shooting. IUPUI also hit 85 percent at the free throw line, fueled by Minnett's perfect 9-of-9 effort. The Jags also won the glass by a 45-35 margin and delivered 22 assists against just 12 turnovers.

Freshman Mike DePersia came off the bench with a career-high eight assists against just one turnover to go along with three points and five boards. DePersia was pressed into extended action as Rimm elected to play a smaller lineup with Isaiah Williams saddled with foul trouble. Williams was limited just just two points and four boards in 11 foul plagued minutes.

IUPUI will now return home for a three-game homestand, beginning against Wright State on Friday, Jan. 10 at 7:00 p.m. inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum. As part of Teacher Appreciation Night, educators can receive discounted tickets by contacting the IUPUI box office at 317-278-2530.
