CARMEL, Ind. - The IUPUI women's cross country team took advantage of pristine conditions to notch some early season fast times as the Jaguars opened the 2019 season at the Butler Twilight at Northview Church on Friday night (Aug. 30). Senior Katelyn Murphy finished third among the 30-runner field in a time of 17:57.5 and sophomore Morgan Fleming was fourth with a personal best 5K time of 17:58.0. Their times were the sixth and seventh fastest in school history and easily the quickest early season times in program history.

Murphy became the first runner in program history to have two career races under 18 minutes while Fleming became the sixth runner in program history to go under 18 minutes. Fleming obliterated her previous best 5K time by 24 seconds in the process.

"It was a wonderful Friday evening for a cross country meet. We were blessed with beautiful weather this evening for the first meet of the season," Murphy said. "It was so awesome to see the freshmen step up already and cover our fourth and fifth spot. It was such an incredible feeling to grind out the race with Morgan by my side. There's no better feeling that running stride for stride with your teammate.

"You grow together in a way that's undesirable. This is only the first meet and I'm beyond excited to see what this Jag Pack is capable of accomplishing. Big things are coming."

Murphy and Fleming provided the low sticks while junior Janine Orvis showed a reliable third finisher, placing 12th overall in a personal record time of 18:54.1. Two freshmen, Ashton Chase and Claire Mehling, rounded out the Jags' top five, placing 19th and 20th, respectively. Chase crossed at 19:42.3 and Mehling finished at 19:49.5.

Just behind them was another pack of IUPUI runners as Sydney Welch, Kara Krol and Jean Carson finished in succession in 24th, 25th and 26th places. Welch, the younger sister of former IUPUI runner Haley Welch, ran a time of 20:14.7, while Krol crossed at 20:18.3. Carson, a junior, finished at 20:19.1.

IUPUI finished third among the three Division I schools, trailing host Butler (28) and Ball State (45). The Jaguars were just off BSU's pace with 56 points.

Head coach Antonio McDaniel's squad will be back in action next weekend when they compete in the Sept. 6 Crusader Open in Valparaiso, Ind.
