INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team will open the 2019 campaign on Friday evening (Aug. 30) when the Jaguars take on California Baptist at 4:00 p.m. at the on-campus Carroll Stadium. The match will be immediately followed by the women's match with Western Illinois and one ticket will cover admission to both contests.   

MATCH INFO 
  • The match will open the 2019 regular season. IUPUI last won a season-opener in 2012 when the Jaguars defeated Detroit Mercy, 2-0, at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. 
  • Admission is just $5 for ages 13-and-up and just $2 for youth, ages 3-12. IUPUI students are admitted for FREE with a valid Crimson Card and parking is FREE during home events in lots 59, 63, 80 and 86. 
  • The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Tommy Barrett is on the call. Live Stats will be available on IUPUIJags.com, beginning at kickoff. 
THE SERIES
  • Friday's game marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools.    
JAG SCRATCHES
  • IUPUI went 5-10-4 last season and 4-3-1 in Horizon League play, earning a spot in the league's postseason tournament. The Jags then won the program's first postseason match since 2007 by upsetting Green Bay in the opening round. IUPUI later took eventual league champion UIC to penalty kicks in the semifinals round. 
  • IUPUI closed the preseason slate with a 1-0 win over Northern Illinois as sophomore Riley Shives tallied the game-winner in the 69th minute and sophomore goalkeeper Quinn McCallion recorded a clean sheet in goal. 
  • Dating back to last season, IUPUI is riding a three-game unbeaten streak, having closed last season with back-to-back wins over Northern Kentucky and Green Bay, followed by a draw with eventual league champion UIC. 
  • The Jaguars were recently picked to finish seventh in the Horizon League, according to the league's preseason polls.  
  • IUPUI returns its top two scorers from a season ago in senior midfielder Alan Aguilar (11 points) and sophomore back Corey Goede (eight points). In addition, McCallion (1.22 GAA) returns in net and five other starters - Tommy Patacca, Cameron Petersen, Anthony Saporito, Shives and Pedro Valladao - all return. 
  • All total, IUPUI returns 14 of the team's 17 goals from a season ago. 
  • Head coach Brian Barnett is in his fourth season on the Jaguars' sidelines. 
SCOUTING CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
  • California Baptist went 9-9-1 last season and 5-6 in WAC play. 
  • CBU recorded a draw in its lone preseason match, tying Cal State-Northridge by a 1-1 score in Riverside, Calif. George Ionascu netted the CBU goal in the final 15 minutes. 
  • California Baptist graduated top scorer Preston Judd (15 goals, 32 points), but return Sebastian Wiesbock (2 goals, 7 assists) and Oliver Bryneus (2 goals, 6 assists).  
  • Senior Albert Escuin returns as the team's starting goalkeeper, having made 13 starts and recording a 1.27 goals against average as a junior. 
  • Head coach Coe Michaelson is in his fourth season as the Lancers' head coach, having compiled a 38-16-3 (.693) record in his first three seasons.

  • IUPUI will head to Bradley on Friday, Sept. 6 for an 8:00 p.m. Eastern match with the Braves.
