DAYTON, Ohio - The IUPUI men's soccer team dropped its exhibition opener on Sunday night (Aug. 18) as the Jags yielded a pair of second half goals and fell on the road at Dayton, 2-0. UD midfielder Jonas Fjeldberg tallied both scores for the Flyers, who were also playing their exhibition opener.
After a scoreless first half both ways, IUPUI head coach
Brian Barnett went deep into his bench to start the second half, including giving true freshman Lucas Morefield the second 45 in net in relief of sophomore starter
Quinn McCallion.
After Morefield had recorded two stops earlier in the half, Dayton finally broke through in the 73rd minute when Fjeldberg pumped a shot through, off an assist from Seth Antwi. In the 81st minute, Fjeldberg capitalized on an opportunity setup by Xavier Zengue to give the hosts breathing room.
IUPUI nearly got one back late in the match, beginning with a Luke Liljegren attempt that resulted in a corner kick. After Dayton defended the first corner, Ethan Miller got on the receiving end of the second corner and had a shot fly wide left.
The Jags earned a third corner in just more than two minutes, but were unable to get a shot attempt from the opportunity.
All total, Dayton finished with a 20-7 margin in shot attempts and 6-0 gap in shots on goal.
Senior midfielder
Tommy Driscoll paced IUPUI with two shot attempts. Barnett used 23 different players, including the two keepers, while Dayton played just 15 players. McCallion made two stops in his scoreless 45 minutes while Morefield collected two more after halftime.
IUPUI will cap preseason play on Friday (Aug. 23) when the Jaguars host Northern Illinois at 2:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium.
