EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The IUPUI women's soccer team fell short at SIUE in preseason play on a steamy Saturday afternoon (Aug. 17), 4-0. The match was SIUE's third of the preseason while the Jags were playing their lone exhibition on the heels of a week-plus of training.
Mallory Mushill scored the game-winner in the game's 13th minute against senior goalkeeper
Sophia Lipka and SIUE's Allison Wendt finished with a goal and an assist.
IUPUI was outshot 16-9 overall and 12-6 on goal in the defeat.
"(SIUE) looked like a team playing their third game and we looked like a team playing our first," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "We had some good, dangerous chances in the first period, but made a couple of mistakes that SIUE capitalized on.
"We saw some good chemistry between Liz, Maya and V, that should be fun to see continue to develop in the coming weeks. As our fitness improves and players continue to get to know each other better, I think we could be a very exciting team."
The game consisted of three 30-minute periods as Johnson used 22 different players and all three goalkeepers. Sophomore
Elizabeth Bueckers, the team's top scorer as a true freshman last season, had a team-high three shot attempts and freshman Maya Lacognato had two attempts.
Lipka yielded two goals in her 30 minutes before giving way to sophomore
Emily McGrath, who tallied five saves against one goal allowed. Redshirt freshman
AP Woodall made two stops in her 30 minutes and also allowed a score.
"We definitely have some things we need to improve and with the competition we should have in practice this week, I think that will happen," Johnson said.
Lacognato and rookie defender Maya Turner were the lone two new faces in the starting lineup, although four other true freshmen saw time off the bench.
IUPUI will now head home to host Toledo on Thursday night (Aug. 22) in the regular season opener at Michael A. Carroll Stadium at 7:00 p.m..
