Time often moves slow in the moment, but life can come at you fast. For senior IUPUI basketball player
Evan Hall, four years has flown by and he's enjoying every minute of it.
Most players after a hard-fought game are tired and just happy to get the win, but Hall always seems to keep his smile rolling as well as keeping team spirits high.
For a smalltown boy from Hindman, Ky., who was really nervous about making the major move to the Circle City, having an aunt an uncle who lived in Indianapolis and helped raise him into the man he is today was a great selling point for IUPUI.
The trust that Hall began to form with head coach
Jason Gardner helped ease the move to Indy as well.
"I fell in love with the young coaching staff and Coach Gardner was amazing. He would always call me every day and I had a really good connection with him," explained Hall.
Hall was honored for Senior Day along with fellow seniors
Ahmed Ismail and
D.J. McCall before the Feb. 24 game against Green Bay.
Senior Day is always filled with emotion as seniors are gracing their home floor for one last time.
"Once they called my name and I was watching the video of all my old plays, I got a little emotional," said Hall. "I didn't let any tears fall because the other team was out there of course, but once the cameras and everything was done, I had to focus, because I had a job to do and had to get my last win here."
Hall has improved in scoring, assists, blocks, steals and minutes played every year with the program. He attributes his improvement on the court to his passion in the weight room and working with Strength and Conditioning Coach
Jason Quarles, who keeps him on point with his nutrition and weight room regiment.
His improvements over the years have paid dividends to the team.
"I think seeing all the senior's classes that have left and trying to watch them, for example
Marcellus Barksdale. When I was a freshman he was a great senior. He always gave it his all and I think that's why this year has been my best year so far."
This year the Jags took down Boston College, Bradley and Horizon League powerhouse Northern Kentucky, but for Hall, the best part of his senior season has been playing with his 'brother' and high school teammate, redshirt junior
Camron Justice.
"Playing with my brother Cam, he made this move to play back with me. He's put a lot of trust in me just as much as I put in him. Since eighth grade we've put so much trust in each other and it's just amazing to get back on the floor with him."
Justice made the transfer to IUPUI prior to the 2017-18 season and sat out last season in compliance with NCAA Division I transfer rules. Though only being at IUPUI for two seasons, he has observed the leadership Hall has given to the program on and off the court.
"His consistency is top notch. He's been like that ever since I've known him. From his freshman year to his senior year of high school, he had an unreal improvement, so I knew from the first day he stepped on campus to the day he stepped off that he was going to make an impact here," said Justice.
Hall and Justice, who led Knott County Central High School to three consecutive Sweet 16 appearances, hope to continue their postseason greatness when March Madness comes around.
"We just have to continue to build confidence and continue to get better individually and as a team every day," Justice elaborated.
Though his senior season is coming to an end, his dreams of playing overseas are still well and alive. After the season, he plans to sit down with his family and decide what's best for his future.
Usually Senior Night means it will be the last game played on their home court for the season, but the Jags have a chance to return home for a Horizon League Tournament game depending on how the final standings line up.
"We're just out here to win. I don't care if I have two points and five rebounds, as long as we get the 'W', that's all that matters," Hall explained.
For the Jags to be successful in their conference tournament, Hall will be a pivotal part of their gameplan, meaning they will need him among others to stay healthy.
The senior forward went down hard with a little over a minute left in his final regular season home game, but he's not letting a slight fall deter him from finishing his season strong and helping his team succeed.
"I'm a coal miner's son. All I know is to fight through adversity and work hard."
