OMAHA, Neb. - Junior
Marcus Burk tallied a season-high 32 points and hit seven treys and classmate
Elyjah Goss recorded his fifth career double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, but it wasn't quite enough as the Jaguars fell to Loyola (Md.) in Omaha, 81-77. Isaiah Hart led four Loyola players in double-digits with 16 points and Andrew Kostecka added 15 points, six boards and six steals in the victory.
In a game of runs, it was Loyola that had the final burst to capture a spot in the championship game of the Cayman Islands Classic Mainland Tournament at Omaha. IUPUI will play the loser of Monday night's contest between host Omaha and Southern University.
IUPUI (2-4) went ahead 63-62 with 7:31 left after Burk capped a 7-0 run by dropping in a layup after a nice find from
Isaiah Williams. Loyola fired back with the game's next eight points, fueled by a three-point play from KaVaughn Scott and a jumper from Cam Spencer. Spencer pushed the lead out to 73-65 with 4:19 left by splashing a trey after Goss had briefly stopped the bleeding with a layup in transition.
Burk followed with a trey and Goss later made it a one-possession game with a traditional three-point play with 1:32 left. However, IUPUI never got a chance to get any closer as the Greyhounds made 5-of-8 free throws in the final 76 seconds to stave off the Jags. In what was a theme for the night, the Jags left points at the free throw line down the stretch, missing a pair in the final 1:05 as part of a 10-of-19 night (52.6 percent) at the charity stripe.
Loyola (3-3) opened the game by building a quick 13-6 lead before Burk and
Jaylen Minnett got the IUPUI attack going. Freshman
Mike DePersia setup a
Zo Tyson dunk and Burk triple on back-to-back possessions before Minnett later hit jumpers on back-to-back trips to tie the score at 18 all and force a Greyhound timeout. Even after the timeout, Burk swished consecutive threes and
Grant Weatherford followed by putting back a Burk miss to give the Jags a 26-18 lead. Loyola rattled off a 14-2 run to take the lead and later built a 37-30 advantage just before halftime.
IUPUI stole some much needed momentum just before the horn, scoring three points in the final second in improbable fashion. Sophomore
Brandon Kenyon was fouled on a drive and made the first, before missing the second with 0.3 left on the clock. However, Goss was able to tip-in the miss at the final buzzer to make it 39-36 at the break.
The Jags tied the game at 44 all on a Minnett three, but Loyola responded with a 13-4 rally to take a nine-point lead. IUPUI returned fire with a 15-5 run to take the 63-62 lead.
Minnett finished with 12 points, a career-high six rebounds and three assists while Williams had seven points, five boards and a career-high five assists while coming off the bench for the first time all season. Weatherford finished with four points, five boards, four assists and two steals.
Burk, who hit 12-of-21 shots and 7-of-10 from deep, played the final 10-plus minutes with four fouls. His 32 points were the most by an IUPUI player since Darell Combs hit the same number against South Dakota on Feb. 25, 2016.
Loyola shot 52 percent from the floor and 13-of-29 (44.8 percent) from three-point range. Scott finished with 14 points on the inside while Spencer hit for 13 points, five assists and four boards off the Greyhound bench.
