VERONA, Wisc. - Senior
Katelyn Murphy put a cherry on top of an already sweet cross country career on Friday when the three-time all-league performer led the IUPUI women's cross country team to the line at Friday's NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. Murphy clocked a 6K time of 21:34.5, placing 50th among the 215-runner field, marking the highest-ever individual regional finish in the program's history. Murphy started back, but continually moving up over the course of the race, including moving up 12 spots in the final 2,000 meters.
"Going into this race, coach talked with us the night before and really set the tone. The goal was to take a risk and leave everything out there for my last cross country race ever - I did just that," Murphy said. "I could not be more proud of my team for challenging me to be the very best version of myself every single time I toe the line. This is a great group of hard working women who inspire me to be a better person on and off the cross country course.
"Cross country has been quite a journey these past four years and I can happily say I went out with a bang and a smile on my face."
Sophomore
Morgan Fleming clocked a time of 22:20.8 to place 101st overall while
Janine Orvis placed 116th overall at 22:32.0. Fleming was virtually side-by-side with Murphy for the first half of the race, but trailed over the latter portion of the race. Meanwhile, Orvis continued her ascent, taking 11 seconds off her previous best while picking off some opposing runners late in the race.
Freshman
Ashton Chase was the Jaguars' No. 4 runner in 167th overall at 23:39.8 and
Paige Boatright capped the group of scorers in 174th place in a time of 23:52.9. Junior
Jean Carson (178th - 24:06.7) and true freshman
Kara Krol (194th - 24:56.9) rounded out the Jaguars' seven entries. Head coach
Antonio McDaniel's team continued to stockpile injuries as the season wound down as true freshman
Claire Mehling missed Friday's meet due to an injury suffered following the Horizon League Championships.
Michigan State won the team title with 49 points while Big Ten teams collected the top four spots as the Spartans were trailed by Michigan (74), Wisconsin (100) and Ohio State (134). Wisconsin's Alicia Monson took the individual tape on her home course, crossing the finish line in a time of 19:59.9.
Murphy's 50th-place finish was the first-ever top 50 finish by an IUPUI runner as both Rachel Zajac (2011) and
Zoey Johnson (2016) peaked with 51st place finishes.
IUPUI will turn the attention to indoor track season, which will begin at the GVSU Holiday Open on Dec. 6 and the Mastodon Opener on Dec. 7.
