Highlights
GREEN BAY, Wisc. - It was a game the IUPUI basketball team had no business winning. The Jaguars committed a season-high 24 turnovers and shot a paltry 44 percent overall and just 29 percent from three-point range. However, IUPUI (11-8, 3-3 HL) came up with clutch plays down the stretch and closed with a 12-5 run to steal a win on the road at Green Bay (9-10, 3-3 HL), 76-70.
Senior
D.J. McCall was impressive with a season-high 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals and
Camron Justice provided 16 points and six boards in the victory. Sophomore
Jaylen Minnett came up with the biggest shots of the evening, including a go-ahead three with 3:33 to play.
Sandy Cohen III had a game-high 22 points and eight rebounds in the loss and JayQuan McCloud hit for 18 for the Phoenix.
"I'm proud of how we hung in there when our offense just wasn't clicking," head coach
Jason Gardner said. "We hit a stretch where we just couldn't hit shots and we took some quick (shots) that led to transition buckets for them. I think we got down six or eight, but we never really lost our composure. We stuck with it and we knew eventually some shots would fall. I thought Jaylen was absolutely clutch down the stretch and he and Cam worked well off of each other.
"D.J. is playing with tons of confidence right now at both ends of the floor and when he plays like that, he gives us another weapon."
Green Bay used a 12-0 run early in the second half to build a 49-43 lead with 13:43 remaining. Minnett stopped the bleeding momentarily by stroking a contested trey over Cohen, but Green Bay continued the surge with the next four points as Minnett's connection was IUPUI's only basket in a seven-minute stretch.
Green Bay led by eight with 8:09 remaining before IUPUI took winning time to heart and outplayed the Phoenix down the stretch.
Minnett drilled a three from the top of the key to cut the Green Bay lead to 62-60 with 6:50 left. After Green Bay added a point to its lead at the free throw line, IUPUI fired back when
Evan Hall sank a pair of freebies and then got a defensive stop. On the ensuing possession, McCall turned the corner after faking a handoff and fired home a one-handed dunk to put the Jags on top.
Green Bay regained the lead, albeit briefly, before Minnett drilled the go-ahead dagger with 3:33 left. The Jags came up with another stop when Justice picked off a pass and raced the other way for a twisting layup in front of Cohen.
Kameron Hankerson cut the Jags lead back to 69-68 by stroking a wing three, but the Jags countered with a pair of McCall free throws. Josh McNair scored a layup with 1:16 left to make it a one-point game before Minnett came through with his final heroics.
With the shot clock winding down, Justice turned down an open look at hit Minnett with an extra pass, allowing the sophomore to step into a 17-footer that hit every inch of the rim before falling through. Green Bay missed a hurried three-point attempt on the next possession and Justice made 3-of-4 free throws in the closing seconds to set the final margin.
"I thought our upperclassmen played like upperclassmen tonight," Gardner said. "After losing (at home) on Saturday, we knew we had to go get one back on the road. These guys were hungry after that loss and wanted to get back out and prove that we're better than that."
Green Bay's defense harassed IUPUI into 24 turnovers, 14 of which came in the first half. However, the Jaguars nearly completely offset the turnover margin by outrebounding the Phoenix 47-29, including grabbing 16 offensive boards.
Elyjah Goss had 11 points and eight boards (five offensive) while Hall added 11 points and five caroms. Both
Grant Weatherford and
Ahmed Ismail grabbed five boards apiece with four of Ismail's coming off the offensive glass.
IUPUI also limited Green Bay to just 40 percent shooting overall and 7-of-26 (27 percent) from three-point range.
With the win, IUPUI remained undefeated against Green Bay since joining the Horizon League prior to last season. The defeat was Green Bay's first inside the Resch Center this season and just the Phoenix's second home loss overall in 2018-19.
IUPUI will cap the two-game road trip on Saturday night (Jan. 19) when the Jaguars face Milwaukee inside UWM Panther Arena at 6:00 p.m. Central (7 Eastern). That game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and can be heard on IUPUIJags.com as Morgan Adcock (pxp) is on the call.
