NORMAL, Ill. - The IUPUI women's soccer team will look to extend its current winning streak to three-in-a-row on Monday night (Oct. 1) when the Jaguars take on Illinois State at 5:00 p.m. Central (6 Eastern) on ESPN+. IUPUI (4-6-3) comes in having won back-to-back matches and riding three straight shutouts. Head coach
Chris Johnson's team is coming off a banner week in which it posted Horizon League wins at UIC (1-0) and over Youngstown State (2-0) to move into the top-four in the league standings.
On Saturday, sophomore
Valentine Pursey registered the game-winner midway through the second half while senior
Denise Veldman also contributed her first career goal for some late insurance. Veldman became the tenth different IUPUI goal scorer this season and netted her first-ever score in her 48th career game.
Jessica Flores,
Elizabeth Bueckers and
Bri Denny all contributed assists while junior goalkeeper
Sophia Lipka turned in her fifth shutout of the season and 16th of her collegiate career.
Sophomore forward
Miranda Ricks continues to lead the team with nine points (2 goals, 5 assists) while four others have two assists. Bueckers and Pursey are tied with Ricks with a team-high two goals. Lipka continues to rank among the Horizon League's best goalkeepers with a 1.22 goals against average and .784 save percentage. Her five shutouts are tied for the most in the league this season.
QUOTABLE: "I'm proud of the ladies today. I thought everyone up and down the roster contributed to this win. Defensively I thought we did a good job of keeping things in front of us and not allowing them many dangerous opportunities at all. Offensively, we're getting there. We're creating chances and now it's just a matter of continuing to capitalize on those chances when we get them. We've done enough the past two games to get these two wins, but it only gets that much harder when you have to go on the road," Johnson said after Saturday's win over Youngstown State.
SCOUTING ILLINOIS STATE: Illinois State is 6-5-2 overall and an undefeated 4-0-1 at home this season. The Redbirds had a four-game winning streak snapped this past weekend with a 2-0 loss at Drake. Kate Del Fava leads the team with 10 points (4 goals, 2 assists) and both Alix McArthur and Angel Krell have three goals each. In goal, Haley Smith has a 1.32 goals against average and 68 saves in 13 games.
INSIDE THE SERIES: IUPUI is 1-1 all-time against Illinois State, winning last year's meeting 3-0 in Indianapolis. The Jags scored three goals in a 5:28 span in the second half of that match, including two Pursey scores separated by just 39 seconds.
NEXT UP: IUPUI will trek to Northern Kentucky for a Horizon League game on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN+.
