EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Sophomore
Tommy Patacca scored a pair of goals and freshman defender
Corey Goede assisted on both as the Jaguars played Evansville to a 2-2 double overtime draw at UE's McCutchan Stadium on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 2). Freshman goalkeeper
Quinn McCallion was extraordinary in goal in just his third collegiate start as well, making seven stops.
"Today's game was an uphill battle," Patacca said. "We let up an early goal and we were down to 10 men with plenty game left to play. As a group, we decided to come together defensively and put in the effort to come back. With each game the team is gradually making progress. We're heading in the right direction."
The Jaguars (0-2-1) were within minutes of winning a match they had no business winning. And in a blink of an eye, it was taken away as Evansville's Hunter Deweese tallied in the 86th minute to prompt extra time.
After yielding the game's first goal in the 13th minute, IUPUI did well to draw even by halftime. Evansville's Tommy Skupien drilled the crossbar in the 12th minute and the Purple Aces enjoyed a man advantage for the final 85 minutes when
Anthony Saporito was sent off in the game's 25th minute with a red card. In the 37th minute, UE's Logan Muck hit the left post with a shot attempt, just before the Jaguars drew even.
Corey Goede, making his collegiate debut, sent a long throw-in to Patacca, who wedged himself between a pair of Evansville defenders. After wrestling for position, Patacca was able to redirect a shot over UE's Frederik Reimer for his second career goal in the game's 40th minute.
IUPUI just missed getting on the board in the 18th minute on a hustle play by
Gianni Catenacci. Catenacci stole possession from Reimer after the UE keeper had received a pass from his right back. However, after gaining possession, Catenacci was unable to sneak a shot into an open net from a tough angle, keeping the Jags off the board temporarily.
The Jags had a clear advantage when Patacca struck again in the 71st minute, again tallying off a Goede throw-in at the opposite end of the field. The Jags tried to kill the game, but was unable to do so as Deweese scored with 4:11 left in regulation.
In overtime, it was Goede and Patacca who again had the Jaguars' best opportunities.
In the 94th minute, Goede redirected a
Pedro Valladao corner kick on frame, only to see Reimer make a diving stop to keep the game going. In the 104th minute, Patacca just missed a hat trick when he angled a header towards the far post after Goede had played service in from the right side.
In the 106th minute, senior
Jared O'Dell was seemingly off to the races on a breakaway on the left side, but was pulled down from behind by Filip Johansson, who was issued a yellow card.
"It was a great team performance and we are definitely heading in the right direction," Goede said. "Every game we play noticeably gets better and better."
IUPUI will return to action next Saturday night (Sept. 8) when the Jaguars host Detroit Mercy at 7:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. That match will be broadcast on ESPN3 as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) calls the action. In addition, fans opting to take the
IUPUI ROAR for 5 Challenge will be admitted for FREE as part of the Welcoming Campus Initiative in conjunction with the university's 50th anniversary.
