INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team moved its unbeaten streak to three on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 12) as the Jaguars played Eastern Illinois to a scoreless tie at Carroll Stadium. Neither offense was particularly threatening as the defenses won the day and limited looks. IUPUI freshman goalkeeper Quinn McCallion, the reigning Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week, made four stops to collect his second shutout of the season.

The game was more of a rock fight than a soccer match as the two sides combined on 41 fouls and just 18 shots as the teams leaned on one another from the opening kickoff. The end result was a second straight shutout as McCallion extended his personal scoreless streak to almost 225 minutes. Head coach Brian Barnett shuffled 21 different bodies onto the field as Wednesday's match was sandwiched between key Horizon League matches. Only senior back Nick Anderson played all 110 minutes while no other IUPUI field player logged more than 80 minutes.

Of Eastern Illinois' 14 shots, only four were on frame and not all of those were difficult stops.

"We've focused a lot of our efforts on understanding what our roles and definition is on the defensive side of the ball. The team's defensive mentality right now is fantastic. We just need to be a little bit better when we go forward with the ball," Barnett said.

EIU's best look of the game came in the 56th minute when Kris Luke got loose on a breakaway from the right flank. Luke unloaded a shot from roughly 18 yards out, but McCallion deflected the attempt wide of the far post for an EIU corner kick.

IUPUI (1-2-2) was held to just four attempts on the day, putting two on target. Both Matthew Skaar and Riley Shives tested EIU keeper Jonathan Burke in the first half and Anderson hit a restart just high of the bar early in the second half. The Jaguars' only other shot attempt came at the close of regulation when sophomore midfielder Cameron Haegele fired a wild attempt in traffic, having it glance off an EIU defender before it got to goal.

Play deteriorated as the game wore on as heavy legs and short fuses began to show on both sides.

The match was IUPUI's third overtime affair in the season's first five games as the Jaguars moved to 0-1-2 in extra time. McCallion lowered his personal goals against average to 0.71 while upping his save percentage to .879 to start the year.

The Jags will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15 when they face UIC at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. That match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
