CHARLESTON, Ill. - The IUPUI women's soccer team snapped a three-game skid by playing Eastern Illinois to a 1-1 tie in Charleston on Friday (Aug. 31). Sophomore
Miranda Ricks accounted for the Jaguars' offense with a penalty kick early in the second half for her second score of the year. EIU netted the equalizer in the 67th minute against junior
Sophia Lipka.
"Today was better play in terms of quality buildups but we're just not in sync in getting the final ball where people need it," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "Defensively, we gave up very little in the run of play. Soph had ot make a couple of stops, but the [shooting] angles were not great and they were easy catches."
After playing much of the first half in the Panthers' end of the field, the Jaguars didn't break the scoring open until the 50th minute when Ricks scored the PK. IUPUI (1-3-1) was awarded a PK when an initial attempt was knocked down by an EIU (0-2-2) defender in the penalty area.
"I think me finishing the PK early in the second half gave us great momentum going in to the rest of the half," Ricks said. "We just need to come together as a team and stay strong defensively as well as finish our chances in the run of play.
"Every game is a step in the right direction and we're ready to get back after it against Toledo on Sunday."
It was Ricks' team-high second goal of the season and fifth of her collegiate career after tallying three times as a true freshman.
The lead lasted just more than 15 minutes ahead of Haylee Renick's equalizer. Renick one-timed Kate Olson's flick past Lipka for her first score of the season.
Lipka closed with six saves while facing 16 shots and EIU's Daniela Bermeo made four saves on the day.
Freshman
Elizabeth Bueckers had a team-high four shot attempts while Ricks,
Emma Chambers and
Denise Veldman had two apiece. Both Bueckers and Chambers had two shots on goal each while Veldman had a golden opportunity for goal fly high of target.
The Jaguars will return to action on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 2) when they trek to Toledo to play the Rockets at 1:00 p.m. Eastern in a match that will be broadcast on ESPN+. A full recap will be posted to IUPUIJags.com immediately after Sunday's action.
