INDIANAPOLIS - Former IUPUI basketball standout
Aaron Brennan has inked his first professional contract, recently signing a deal with Walter Tigers Tübingen in central Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The club plays in the country's top league and the 6-foot-6 Brennan is expected to head overseas on Aug. 5.
"I am thrilled and humbled to represent such a highly recognized organization like the Tigers," Brennan said. "I am very excited for the opportunity that is ahead of me and will show my gratitude back by carrying myself to a higher standard and hard work."
Brennan averaged 7.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game in 122 contests in an IUPUI uniform, shooting 47 percent from the floor and 38 percent from three-point range. As a senior, he averaged a team-high 12.4 points per game to accompany his 4.5 rebounds per contest. He also had new career-highs in assists, blocked shots and steals as a senior while playing a career-best 27.3 minutes per game. He scored in double-figures 16 times as a senior, including three games of 20-or-more. He registered his lone double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 boards in a win over Green Bay on Jan. 12 and tallied a career-high 25 points on two different occasions.
Academically, he was named to IUPUI's Academic Advisor's List seven times in his career while earning his degree in Organizational Leadership & Supervision.
"We're definitely proud of AB for earning this opportunity to begin his professional career in Germany," said head coach
Jason Gardner, who enjoyed a long professional career, primarily in Germany. "It's a good league with really quality coaches and players. I think [Brennan]'s game will translate well overseas though because he does so many things well. He's not flashy, but he can play with his back to the basket and face up and make plays. He can handle it enough to be dangerous and he's a good rebounder, passer and defender.
"I think he's really going to enjoy it and will thrive in a professional playing environment. He's always been a kid that's done everything we asked and he's leaving here with his degree and an opportunity to play professionally. That's what we preach when we're recruiting - if you do what's asked of you, you'll have an opportunity to earn your degree and continue playing at the next level."
Brennan is represented by Tangram Sports.
He joins a group of former Jaguars playing professionally that includes Cleveland Cavaliers' guard George Hill and overseas standouts Robert Glenn and Alex Young. In addition,
Marcellus Barksdale,
Darell Combs and
Matt O'Leary all signed professional contracts in the past two years, but have opted to return to the states.
