INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball program and head coach #
Jason Gardner# have announced the addition of high scoring guard
Marcus Burk, who played the past two seasons at Campbell University. Burk starred at nearby Franklin Central High School and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
"We're definitely excited that Marcus has chosen to continue his basketball career at IUPUI," Gardner said. "He can really, really play and he's an Indiana kid, so he's got a great feel for the game and a high basketball IQ. He's proven he can play at a high level and he's going to come in and have an immediate impact on our program. He can knock down shots, has really good range on his jumper, but he can also lock in defensively and help us on the glass from his guard spot. I know he's excited to be back close to home and have the opportunity to be surrounded by friends and family."
Burk, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 15.1 points and 3.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore at Campbell, connecting on 50 percent from the field and 91 treys at a 41 percent clip. He scored in double-digits 23 times and had three games of 30 points or more. He was named the Big South Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 27 after averaging 24.3 points over a four-game stretch that saw him hit for 33 points against UNCW and 31 points against Johnson & Wales. He closed the season ranking among the Big South leaders in scoring, threes made and three-point percentage.
As a freshman, Burk averaged 8.0 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while shooting 43 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three-point range. In two seasons with the Camels, he appeared in 68 games and made 43 starts while making 157 treys.
Burk starred at Franklin Central High School, averaging 25.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists as a senior before being named to the Indianapolis Star Super Team. He helped FCHS to four straight sectional titles and was a two-time all-conference selection. He was named All-Marion County as a senior, along with being named to the IBCA Senior Supreme 15.
Burk continues a long line of Division I-transfer recruited to IUPUI since Gardner's taking over the program in 2014-15. Under Gardner, five different D1 transfers have averaged at least nine points per game in a season in an IUPUI uniform (
Darell Combs,
Matt O'Leary,
Jordan Pickett,
Kellon Thomas &
Ron Patterson). In addition, the 2018-19 squad will boast three Division I-transfers in #
Ahmed Ismail#, #
Camron Justice# and #
Mike Sagay#.
"We've had a lot of success with transfers and taking that transfer season to develop players' games," Gardner said. "Just like the guys that came in before him, Marcus is going to play a major influence in practice next year and then will continue to make an impact after he's sat out a season and continued to work on his game. More than anything, we're just excited to get him here and get him in our program."
Burk becomes IUPUI's third addition for next season, joining incoming freshmen
Jack Hansen and
Brandon Kenyon.
