INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI men's tennis team dropped its final three matches of the season to fall just short of qualifying for the Horizon League Men's Tennis Tournament.
GREEN BAY 4, IUPUI 3
IUPUI (7-18, 1-6 Horizon) began its weekend taking on Green Bay in Milwaukee, Wis., on Friday (April 20) to make up for the match postponed due to weather earlier in the season. Against the Phoenix, IUPUI fell behind 3-1 after four singles matches with
David Beasley grabbing the only point, winning the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-4.
Eric Hollingsworth earned a three set win, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) to pull the Jags within one and
Bradley Luetschwager tied the match with a win at No. 6, 6-4, 6-4.
The match headed to doubles play where Green Bay took the No. 1 match but
Jac Newis and
Ethan Mardanus-Budiono took the No. 2 match 6-3. In the deciding match, Beasley and
Grant Esposito fell in a tie-break, losing 6-7, (7-4) and Green Bay pulled out a 4-3 win.
CLEVELAND STATE 6, IUPUI 1
The Jags returned home to take on Cleveland State on Saturday (April 21). IUPUI's match with the No. 2 team in the Horizon League led the a 6-1 defeat for the Jags.
Bradley Luetschwager picked up the lone point for IUPUI, winning the No. 6 singles match forcing a third set after dropping the first. Luetschwager won the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Two Jags,
David Beasley and
Eric Hollingsworth, lost in three sets. Beasley dropped the No. 1 match, 6-4, 6-7 (7-4), 2-6 and Hollingsworth fell 6-4, 3-6, 5-7.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE 4, IUPUI 3
In the final match of the season, IUPUI looked to end on a high note against the Youngstown State Penguins but fell just short, dropping the match 4-3.
IUPUI managed to pick up one win in doubles play, with
Bradley Luetschwager and
Grant Weaver winning the No. 1 match 6-3, but Youngstown State took both the No. 2 and No. 3 matches to win the doubles point.
In singles play,
David Beasley tied the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1. After Youngstown State won the No. 4 and No. 5 matches,
Jac Newis pulled the Jags within one, taking the No. 2 match 6-0, 2-6, 7-6.
Youngstown State finished off the match taking the No. 3 singles match in three sets.
