INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's tennis team's season came to an end over the weekend as the Jags fell to Cleveland State (5-2) and Youngstown State (6-1) in their final two matches.
Going up against two of the top teams in the league, IUPUI (4-18, 0-8 Horizon), started things out well against the Vikings, taking the doubles point after getting a 6-4 win at No. 1 by the team of
Valeriia Lavrenchuk and
Samantha Mayer and another 6-4 win at No. 2 by
Mariella Pessina and
Krystal Grubb.
In singles play, Grubb earned the lone point for IUPUI, picking up a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot. Both Lavrenchuk and Mayer forced played in three set matches but were not able to pull out wins as Cleveland State won five of the six singles contests.
On Sunday (April 22), IUPUI closed out its season against Youngstown State. After the Penguins won the No. 3 doubles match, IUPUI took the No. 1 doubles match 7-5. Grubb and Pessina fell just short of earning the doubles point losing in a tie break 7-6 (7-1).
Molly Nguyen picked up the lone singles point for the Jags winning the No. 5 match after winning the first set 6-1 and Youngstown State's player had to retire in the second set.
The loss to the Penguins ended the careers of four Jaguars, Lavrenchuk, Mayer,
Marina Schneiger and
Hayley Trinkle.
