DETROIT – IUPUI women's basketball will look to punch its ticket to the Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship game with a win over Wright State on Monday (March 5).
The Jags got by Oakland in a tough matchup against the Golden Grizzlies, winning 56-49.
Macee Williams and
Danielle Lawrence each scored 14 points for IUPUI and Williams pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
IUPUI made enough plays down the stretch as Oakland was able to pull within one with three minutes left, but the Jags closed out the game on an 8-1 run to secure a spot in the semis.
Head Coach Austin Parkinson's squad will now take on No. 3 Wright State, who took down No. 6 Cleveland State, 83-61 on Sunday (March 4). The Raiders were led by Horizon League Player of the Year Chelsea Welch, who scored 24 points, hitting 8-of-12 free throws. Mackenzie Taylor finished with 22 points, dropping six threes. The Raiders also dominated the glass against the Vikings, outrebounding Cleveland State by 22 (52-32).
It is easy to expect that the matchup between IUPUI and Wright State will be a close one as both games have been decided by three points each, with each team winning on the road during the regular season.
In what will be a battle of two of the best offenses, defense has been the deciding factor as both teams held each other well under their season averages in the two regular season meetings.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
Lawrence led the Jags with 25 points in IUPUI's 64-61 win over Wright State on Jan. 21. In the matchup, IUPUI took a 15 point second half lead before holding on to the three point win.
Tamya Sims was second on the team with 16 points and Williams added 13.
Wright State turned the tables in Indianapolis on Feb. 23.
Sydney Hall was the games leading scorer with 19 points and Williams posted a 16-point, 10 rebound double-double but Wright State shot 52 percent from the field in the second half to close out the Jags.
IUPUI took a one-point lead in the to break but only shot 39 percent in the second half and committed 20 turnovers in the loss to the Raiders.
