With the best start since 2009, the Jaguars move to 5-2 on the season with a victory Wednesday night against the Bradley Braves.
The Jags wasted no time in quickly securing a 13-2 lead to kick off the game, never looking back. Junior
Camron Justice was a major part of the 85-73 win over the Braves with a game-high 27 points. For Justice, the success of the season has largely come from the dedication this team has shown on and off the court.
"From the day we stepped foot on this campus, everyone was invested," said Justice. "We are trying to be the best team we can be, and we know that we have to make sacrifices.
"We want to do what everyone else is trying to do: get better each and every day. We want to come in the gym and work on what we need to work on. We want to scheme, we want to scheme for us and do whatever we can to win the next game."
In addition to the hard work each and every player has put in so far, the team dynamic has also been a key factor.
"I just think we are clicking really well right now, and I think it starts on the defensive end for us," said senior
D.J. McCall. "I think that we not only have a very talented team, but a very unselfish and tough team."
McCall has been around for the good and the ugly. He says that this team is different, hungry for more, especially the younger players.
"It's really a treat seeing these guys develop, like Jaylen [Minnett] and Elyjah [Goss]," said McCall. "Even an older guy like Ahmed [Ismail], I know that he was struggling in the beginning of the season and then these last couple of games, he has really picked it up.
"He is coming off the bench for us, but he is playing really well, and I think that's when our team is at our best."
The Jags know there are some areas left for improvement, however, to continue to produce the best results.
"We need to improve on just finishing our games," said sophomore
Elyjah Goss. "Once we get a large lead, like we did tonight, we settle back a bit, and try and lollygag, but in that situation, we just need to keep focused and just finish the job."
The season will continue Saturday with a match up against the Ball State Cardinals, where IUPUI will look to continue their hot streak.
"It's a great win tonight, but we aren't done yet," said Goss. "We still have a lot of games to go and a whole season to stay focused and get the outcome."
