Condensed Game
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior
Camron Justice scored a game-high 29 points, including perfect 13-of-13 at the charity stripe, and
Nick Rogers drilled a 30-foot dagger in the closing minute as the IUPUI basketball team stunned Boston College on Wednesday night (Nov. 14), 76-69. Justice's big night helped gift wrap a present for head coach
Jason Gardner, who collected his 50th career victory on his 38th birthday. The win was IUPUI's second-ever over an ACC opponent and the first since 2001. It was the Jaguars' first victory over a power conference foe since defeating Seton Hall in 2008.
Justice's high school teammate, senior
Evan Hall, added 16 points and 10 boards for his sixth career double-double. The Jags outrebounded Boston College 40-28 overall with both Hall and
Elyjah Goss grabbing 10 apiece. Goss just missed his second straight double-double, closing with nine points and 10 caroms.
"I think we surprised everyone except for the young men in our locker room. We've got a good team and I was glad we were able to show that tonight," Gardner said. "Even though Cam didn't shoot it great tonight, he made the big shots down the stretch and was our go-to guy when we needed him. I thought Evan and Elyjah were monsters inside, particularly on the offensive glass in terms of keeping possessions alive and getting us second shots.
D.J. McCall was absolutely outstanding defensively in the second half. To hold a guy like Bowman down like he did in the second half is pretty special.
"Every single guy contributed to this win and I know it's early in the year, but it's pretty awesome when you get a team win like that on the road. I'm proud of our guys for coming in here and taking care of business."
Despite a shoddy start, IUPUI (2-1) seemed to be on equal footing with the ACC foe for the entirety of the evening. Justice was summoned to the bench early in the game with two quick fouls and the offense sputtered in his absence. Boston College (2-1) built a 20-7, largely behind future NBAer Ky Bowman and 25-year-old Jordan Chatman's hot shooting. The large deficit forced Gardner to roll the dice and bring back his team's top scorer at the midway point of the first stanza.
Even with Justice back on the floor, Chatman's third trey of the first half made it 27-13 at the 8:08 mark before the Jaguars' offense gained a little steam. Justice eventually responded, scoring 13 points over the final 10-plus, including nine points as part of a 12-2 IUPUI burst. The Jags ultimately trailed 42-36 at the break as Nik Popovic closed the half with a dunk at the horn.
IUPUI hit the offensive glass early and often in the second half, helping offset a 40 percent shooting night and 8-of-25 (32 percent) effort from three-point range. The Jags finally went ahead with 10:18 to play when
Grant Weatherford spun through traffic and banked in a layup as part of an old fashioned three-point play. The game was tied at 64 all with 4:44 left when Popovic split a pair of free throws, but IUPUI scored the next four points and never relinquished the advantage.
Even after Bowman cut the lead back to 69-66 with 2:41 left on a layup, the Jaguars responded with a three-point possession that took nearly a minute off the clock. Hall missed an initial opportunity, but Goss grabbed the offensive board and kicked out to Justice. After draining the shot clock again, Justice splashed a triple in front of his own bench with 1:40 to play. Boston College closed back within three with a minute to play before Rogers ultimately sealed the deal. The Jags again opted to milk the shot clock before getting into a set with only a few ticks left. Rogers made it work, swishing a nearly 30-footer on a broken set to make it a two-possession game.
Rogers closed with eight points and made all four shots he attempted - two treys and two free throws - off the Jaguars' bench.
Chatman paced three Eagles in double-digits with 20 points and freshman Wynston Tabbs pitched in 15 points. Bowman closed with 14 points and nine boards, but scored just two after halftime.
The Jags shot just 37 percent from the floor in the second half, but converted 16 offensive boards into 13 points and outscored BC 26-20 in the paint. They also outscored the Eagles 19-4 on fast break points and outscored the hosts 40-27 after halftime. Defensively, IUPUI limited Boston College to just six second half field goals on less than 32 percent shooting.
Justice's 13 made free throws tied for the fourth-most in school history on a perfect shooting night. Collectively, IUPUI made 20-of-25 (80 percent) free throws in the win.
IUPUI will continue the four-game Fort Myers Tip-Off on Friday night (Nov. 16) when the Jaguars play at Richmond at 7:00 p.m.. That contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
