INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team's regular season came to a crashing close on a rainy, chilly Friday afternoon (Oct. 26) as visiting Oakland University staved off the Jaguars, 1-0 at Carroll Stadium. OU's Hollie Clement scored on a header in the game's 43rd minute to account for the game's only offense.
With the win, Oakland (3-11-3, 3-3-3 HL) leapfrogged the Jaguars in the Horizon League standings as IUPUI (6-10-3, 3-5-1 HL) slid out of the top six in the standings.
Oakland dominated the run of play in the first half, capping the stanza with a header from Hollie Clement from point blank range to break open the scoring in the 43rd minute. Clement's first goal of the year was a culmination of Taylor Thalheimer's short cross from the opposite post, allowing her to place a shot past
Sophia Lipka. OU's Sydnye Gagner also collected an assist on the play in setting up the game-winner.
Oakland outshot IUPUI 9-6 before halftime and held an 8-1 advantage at one point.
The poor playing conditions compounded the Jaguars' offensive struggles as connecting passes and sustaining possession was nearly impossible. IUPUI had a great scoring opportunity early in the match as a cross got past OU keeper Jaimie Leas to the far post, but a pair of IUPUI attackers were unable to get on the connecting end. Later,
Natalie McNally drilled a free kick right at Leas, forcing the OU keeper to make an initial stop. On the rebound, a scrum of IUPUI players tried to get a finishing touch, the final of which was a
Braegan Lyon attempt that was cleared off the line by an Oakland defender. Leas ultimately pounded on the loose ball right at the end line to kill the scoring chance.
In the second half, sophomore forward
Miranda Ricks had IUPUI's best looks of the bunch, redirecting two headers off restarts wide of target in the closing minutes.
Oakland, finished with a 16-10 shot advantage led by Lauren Bos' four attempts. Ricks, Lyon and
Renae Blevins had two shot attempts each for the Jaguars. Blevins had a drive from distance in the first half go just wide of target in one of the Jaguars' better attempts of the day.
Lipka closed with seven saves while Leas made three stops in the shutout. It marked the eighth time this season the Jaguars have been shutout, five of which came in Horizon League play.
