DAYTON, Ohio - IUPUI head soccer coach
Brian Barnett had predicted the opening 10 minutes of his team's match at No. 17 Wright State on Saturday (Oct. 20) would go a long way in determining the outcome. The third-year leader couldn't have been more precise as host Wright State scored a goal in the game's third minute to account for the only offense of the day as the Raiders outlasted the Jaguars, 1-0. WSU's Alec Philippe directed a shot just past freshman goalkeeper
Quinn McCallion less than three minutes into regulation for his 11th score of the season and the eventual game-winner.
That was all the Raiders would need as WSU goalkeeper Joel Sundell dialed up five stops in the shutout victory, extending their winning streak to three-in-a-row while taking sole possession of first place in the league standings. IUPUI (3-9-3, 3-3-1 HL) remained third in the league standings with a cast of foes lurking.
Playing with the wind at its back, Wright State (11-1-2, 5-0-1 HL) was the aggressor from the outset, getting a clean look Deri Corfe, just moments ahead of Philippe's game-winner. It was Jackson Dietrich who played Philippe into open space in behind the Jaguars' back line and the WSU attacker angled a grounded shot just inside the far post for the day's initial strike.
Despite the wind, IUPUI was able to get some quality chances in the game's early going, including a flurry of
Cameron Petersen corner kicks. The first of which was a driven ball to the back post where
Corey Goede headed a bullet on frame, only to have it sent away by a Wright State defender.
Later, senior defender
Sam Gavin drove a tester at Sundell in the 24th minute, forcing the WSU keeper to make a solid stop.
IUPUI did well to make it to halftime trailing just 1-0 as Dietrich hit the far post in the 30th minute, just missing an insurance tally. At the start of the second half, Corfe had a brilliant strike tick off the top of the crossbar and out of play on an attempt he though would result in a goal.
Offensively, IUPUI's best chance of the second half came in the 69th minute when Gavin drove a restart from just inside midfield all the way into the 18-yard box. Sundell came off his line and punched the ball into the air, allowing sophomore
Matthew Skaar to drive a volley back on target. However, the attempt was right at Sundell, who made the save in front of a pair of defenders.
Late in the match, IUPUI threw heavy numbers into the attack, resulting in late attempts from
Gianni Catenacci,
Tommy Patacca,
Landon Malott and
Anthony Saporito. However, Saporito was the only one to get a shot on frame, resulting in Sundell's final stop of the night.
Wright State outshot IUPUI 19-13 overall and 9-5 on frame, however the Jags had a 7-0 edge on corner kicks. Gavin led the IUPUI attack with three shot attempts.
IUPUI will return to action on Tuesday night (Oct. 23) when the Jags step away from league play to take on Purdue Fort Wayne at 7:00 p.m. in Fort Wayne.
