CHICAGO - IUPUI senior guard Ron Patterson tallied 18 points on a career-high six treys, but it wasn't enough as the Jaguars fell in Horizon League action at UIC, 71-62. A slow scoring second half on the road spelled doom for the Jags as UIC swept the season series with the win. IUPUI led 50-49 with 7:52 to play, but saw the Flames rattle off a decisive 12-0 run to finish off the Jags.

Sophomore Nick Rogers put IUPUI ahead 50-49 at the free throw line with 7:52 left, but the Jags went scoreless for the next 3:39 as the hosts surged ahead 61-50. Tai Odiase and Jordan Blount fueled the run, each getting loose for transition dunks to turn the momentum squarely in their favor.

"Once they got the momentum, they did a good job of sustaining it and we just missed some shots during that stretch," head coach Jason Gardner said. "With their length and athleticism, they're a good team defensively and do a good job of protecting the rim. Even when we did get past them off the dribble, they were good about recovering and either blocking or challenging our shots.

"Obviously, winning on the road is tough and it's extra tough in league play. I liked our guys' fight tonight, but I didn't think we always executed the best we could. Those mistakes and empty possessions are what kill you on the road."

IUPUI (7-14, 4-6 HL) made just seven second half field goals and shot 33.3 percent for the game while UIC (11-11, 6-3 HL) shot 45.5 percent and extended its winning streak to three. Patterson was joined in double-digits by Rogers, who closed with 11 points. Junior Evan Hall added eight points and tied his career-high with 11 rebounds.

Marcus Ottey led UIC with 18 points and Dikembe Dixson contributed 15 points. Odiase finished with 11 points, nine boards and four blocked shots and Blount had seven points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

IUPUI got off to another slow start, not scoring a field goal for more than four minutes before Patterson buried a corner three. Patterson continued to shoot it well in the first half as his third trey pushed IUPUI ahead 19-12 near the midpoint of the half. The Jaguars led by as many as eight on a couple different occasions before a quick 5-0 UIC burst made it 29-27 with just more than a minute before the break.

Redshirt freshman Elyjah Goss, from nearby Plainfield, Ill., scored the final three points of the half, including a tip-in just ahead of the final horn to give IUPUI a 32-27 halftime lead.

IUPUI maintained the lead for the beginning stages of the second half before UIC used an 8-0 run to take a 42-41 lead. Clint Robinson keyed that run with back-to-back buckets in close and Godwin Boahen capped it with an acrobatic finish.

Patterson gave IUPUI the lead back with a corner three off a broken set and the teams traded buckets back-and-forth before UIC ran off the 12-0 run late.

Aside from Patterson's 6-of-12 shooting, which included 6-of-10 from deep, the remainder of the squad made just 12-of-42 attempts. Senior Aaron Brennan had his streak of double-digit scoring games stopped at seven as he was limited to eight points on 1-of-7 shooting.

"Buss has been shooting well in practice and it's carried over to games. He even had a couple times where he turned down shots today, rather than shoot it," Gardner said. "When he's going like that, we want him to shoot it because that'll make it easier for us to play inside-out."

The loss dropped IUPUI to 0-5 all-time against UIC and extended the Jags' currently losing streak to three.

IUPUI will continue the stretch of five straight games away from home with a two-game trek to Detroit next weekend. The Jaguars will face Detroit Mercy on Friday night (Feb. 2) at 7:00 p.m. in a game that will be aired on ESPN3 and broadcast on Fox Sports 97.5 FM and iHeartRadio. IUPUI will close the two-game trip at Oakland University on Sunday (Feb. 4) at noon.
