INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball coaching staff will be participating in the nationwide Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers initiative this weekend when the Jaguars face UIC on Saturday (Jan. 27) in Chicago. Head coach
Jason Gardner and his coaching staff will don sneakers with their suits on the sidelines to help raise funds and awareness about the fight against cancer. The Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers program was founded to serve as a source of inspiration and hope for those facing cancer.
In addition, it provides a visible reminder about the importance of fighting cancer. Not only will Gardner wear sneakers, but they'll be laced with
Princess Lacey's Laces from Shoe Carnival and he'll wear a specially produced Coaches vs. Cancer lapel pin during Saturday's game.
"As coaches, we've been provided a platform and an ability to give back," Gardner said. "I think it's important that we use this opportunity to raise awareness for those fighting for their lives against cancer. It's a simple gesture for us as coaches, but it has a huge impact on those in need.
"It's been fun to see coaches all over the country do their part this week and I'm happy to do my small part on Saturday."
The official Suits and Sneakers Week runs from Jan. 22-28 and
a special eBay auction began on Jan. 20, featuring sneakers and ties signed by college coaches.
