INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI Athletics Department and head basketball coach
Jason Gardner announced a second addition to the program at the turn of the semester as Arizona-native
Trevor Johnson recently joined the Jaguars. The 6-foot-2 guard is immediately eligible for practice, but won't be able to compete in games until the 2018-19 season. He'll have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Johnson most recently played at Mesa [Ariz.] Community College where he appeared in 27 games and made 12 starts. He averaged 6.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game while shooting 37.4 percent from the field. He had 11 double-digit scoring games, including a season-high 16 points against Glendale Community College (Feb. 3).
Johnson brings a lofty high school resume to the IUPUI program as a four-year varsity standout at Flagstaff (Ariz.) High School. He helped Flagstaff to a 2014 Division II state championship runner-up finish and a 27-4 record. He was named Arizona Daily Sun's Boys Basketball Player of the Year as a senior after averaging 20 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals per game. He was also named the Division II, Section One Player of the Year award and collected All-Division First Team honors from the AIA.
His father Tyrone played collegiately at Northern Arizona from 1993-95 and his sister Ileana played at Western Kentucky from 2011-15.
"Trevor's a really good kid and a quality addition to our program," Gardner said. "He's played at a high level and one of the top high school guards in Arizona. We didn't know a ton about him but the more we've seen and more we've learned, we know he's going to add to what we're trying to do.
"The fact that his dad and sister played Division I ball tells me that he's from good pedigree and understands what it means to be successful at the Division I level."
IUPUI now has four players sitting out the season as Johnson joins a group that includes
Ahmed Ismail (Manhattan),
Camron Justice (Vanderbilt) and
Mike Sagay (Boston College).
