Hall's Game-Winner
INDIANAPOLIS - Junior
Evan Hall scored from point blank range as the final horn sounded to cap a wild night at Indiana Farmers Coliseum, sealing a 72-71 Horizon League victory for IUPUI. IUPUI (5-11, 2-3 HL) hit a season-high 14 treys at a 56 percent clip, but it was the Jaguars' shortest shot attempt of the night that proved to be the winner.
After Milwaukee's Brett Prahl threw down a go-ahead dunk with 6.9 seconds left, IUPUI opted against calling a timeout and
Nick Rogers sprinted the ball up the right-hand side. The Indianapolis-native drove to the baseline and threaded a pass to Hall in traffic, who banked in a bunny from inside the left block, just before the final horn sounded. The three officials had a lengthy review before ultimately sticking with the initial ruling that the shot was clear of Hall's hand just ahead of the red indicator lights.
"It was the biggest play of my life," the jubilant Hall said afterwards.
"This was a big time win for us," head coach
Jason Gardner said. "The guys truly stuck with it until the final horn sounded and that's why we won. We never gave in and we never gave up on each other. I'm proud of our guys for getting it done tonight and taking care of our home floor. We knew it wasn't going to be easy, but that's what league play is all about.
"Ev stepped up and made a big time play tonight. A really big time play."
Senior
Aaron Brennan canned a career-high four treys and finished with 22 points while six different Jags hit at least one triple. Fellow senior
Ron Patterson also knocked in four triples, including a pivotal 30-footer late in the contest to stake IUPUI to a 70-67 lead with 1:16 left.
Milwaukee (9-9, 2-3 HL) answered with a Bryce Nze dunk with 55 seconds left, setup by a nifty feed from Brock Stull. On its penultimate possession of the night, Brennan misfired on an open trey from the wing, giving Milwaukee a final chance. The Panthers took advantage, nearly turning it over before Stull turned the corner and fed Prahl for a two-handed dunk, setting up Hall's heroics.
Hall's bucket came courtesy of Rogers' fifth assist of the night and was just his second field goal in a 2-of-6 shooting performance. IUPUI hit 45.5 percent from the floor, but was more than comfortable from behind the arc. While Brennan and Patterson combined to go 8-of-16 from deep,
D.J. McCall and
Jaylen Minnett both hit two each. Rogers and McCall both closed with nine points in the win.
Jeremiah Bell led four Panthers in double-digits with 21 points and Stull added 15 points and six boards. Nze had 12 points and seven boards off the bench and Prahl closed with 10 points. Milwaukee outrebounded IUPUI 34-28 and outscored IUPUI 36-20 in the paint.
Neither team led by more than eight points throughout as IUPUI's largest lead came in the opening minutes as the Jaguars built a quick 9-3 lead on three early triples. Milwaukee led 36-32 at the half and pushed the advantage out to eight early in the second half on an Nze layup. The game ended with seven ties and eight lead changes, two of which came in the final 10 seconds.
Hall became the latest in a growing list of Jaguars to score a buzzer beating game-winner during Gardner's tenure. The most recent was Darell Combs last year against South Dakota State while Jordan Pickett, Marcellus Barksdale and P.J. Boutte are also on that list.
IUPUI will continue the four-game homestand on Friday night (Jan. 12) when the Jaguars host Green Bay at 7:00 p.m. at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Fans in attendance will receive FREE ROAR t-shirts while supplies last and Jags fans are asked to wear
RED. In addition, the 2018 Hall of Fame Class of Reggie Butler (men's basketball), Megan Hock (women's soccer) and the 2003 men's basketball team will be recognized throughout the evening. Tickets are available via
