RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The IUPUI women's soccer team will embark on a two-game trip to New York, beginning on Friday (Sept. 1) as the Jaguars will face Manhattan and Wager over the weekend. Friday's match at Manhattan will kickoff at 7:00 while Sunday's (Sept. 3) meeting with Wagner will begin at noon.
IUPUI (1-3) is on the heels of a heartbreaking 3-2 double overtime loss to Eastern Kentucky on Sunday, after having built a 2-1 halftime advantage. After yielding the game's first goal, senior
Krissy Kirkhoff brought the Jaguars even with her first tally of the season, scoring off a
Hayley Shelton assist. Moments later, freshman
Kamryn Benscoter netted her first career goal off assists from Shelton and
Valentine Pursey to give the Jags a 2-1 lead.
However, a free kick in the 76th minute brought EKU even and the visiting Colonels netted the game-winner in the 108th minute. An errant clearance from the defensive third left EKU's Jordan Foster open near the top of the 18 and she rolled a shot past sophomore
Sophia Lipka for the winner.
Pursey leads the IUPUI attack with three points, including the squad's game-winner at Evansville earlier this season. Shelton has a team-high two assists, upping her career total to 13 in her four seasons. In goal, Lipka has a 1.67 goals against average and 19 saves in her four starts, including a shutout.
"Getting the opportunity to play some opponents from outside the Midwest will be a good test for us," Shelton said. "I'm sure it will prepare us well for Horizon League play. The team is focused and ready to come back home with two wins to put us back at .500."
Senior
Sarah Jacobs (336) and freshman
Natalie McNally lead the field players in minutes played in the season's first four games.
Scouting Manhattan: Manhattan is 1-2-1 to start the season and 1-1 on their home field with a win over NJIT and a loss to Fordham. The Hatters have scored three goals in four matches thus far and authored a 1-0 shutout in the season-opening win over NJIT. Maria Clemente has Manhattan's lone game-winner of the season while Erica Modena has attempted a team-high 12 shot attempts. In goal, Kelly DiGregorio and Olivia Printy have both earned two starts in net and have combined on a 0.95 goals against average and 10 saves. Printy was responsible for the season-opening shutout win.
Scouting Wagner: Wagner is 2-0-1 to start the year, having outscored foes 5-3 in three matches. Maria Nunez leads the Wagner attack with two goals while Mya Donnelly has a team-high two assists. Katie Viscardi has started all three matches in goal, but Delaney Beck has played the bulk of the team's minutes between the posts, logging 160 of the team's 295 minutes. The duo has combined on a 0.91 goals against average and 18 saves. Wagner's lone home match of the year was a season-opening 1-1 draw with Liberty to start the season.
