INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team dropped a Sunday afternoon (Aug. 27) to Eastern Kentucky in heartbreaking fashion at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. allowing a pair of second half goals, capped by the golden goal in the 108th minute in a 3-2 defeat. IUPUI (1-3) got goals from senior
Krissy Kirkhoff and freshman
Kamryn Benscoter and senior
Hayley Shelton provided a pair of assists, but it wasn't enough.
Looking to build a two-game winning streak after winning at Evansville on Friday night, Head Coach Chris Johnson's team fell into a hole midway through the first half. EKU's Sarah Owusu tallied the game's first goal in the 26th minute, rolling a ball inside the far post out of sophomore keeper
Sophia Lipka's reach. It seemed as though it took conceding a goal to ignite the Jaguars' attack. From there, the response was swift and decisive.
Just more than two minutes later, Kirkhoff answered with her first score of the year and 24th of her collegiate career. Shelton sent a lead pass to Kirkhoff, giving her half a field and tons of green to work with. Kirkhoff was able to fend off a defender before hitting a right-footed shot well inside the far post, beating EKU netminder Anna Hall on the play. Earlier in the match, Kirkhoff had a left-footed attempt from nearly the same spot scoot just wide of the far post.
In the 33rd minute, Shelton earned her second assist of the day, setting up Benscoter's score from the doorstep. Freshman
Valentine Pursey centered a long pass to Shelton, who opted to flare a ball to the far post, rather than attempt a shot on frame. The ball landed perfectly to Benscoter, who redirected a shot into an empty net for her first collegiate tally.
IUPUI held a 2-1 lead until the 76th minute when EKU's Emmi Carroll delivered the equalizer. Awarded a restart nearly 25 yards from goal, Carroll drilled a shot over a five-person defensive wall and inside the left post, leaving Lipka with no play on the ball.
EKU continued to control play late in regulation, missing the winner from a variety of distances and angles. Jordan Foster and Carroll both had quality chances late in regulation, but were unable to tally. EKU outshot the Jaguars 7-1 in the two overtime periods, capped by Jordan Foster's game-winner in the 108th minute. The Jags were unable to clear a ball from their own zone, leaving Foster wide open near the top of the 18. Given time and space, the EKU attacker calmly drove a shot past Lipka for her second tally of the year.
EKU closed the match with a 21-10 shot advantage and 7-6 edge in corner kicks. The speedy Owusu had a game-high seven attempts while Kirkhoff paced IUPUI with three shot attempts. Lipka recorded four saves, including a brilliant stop of an Owusu attempt in the second overtime to keep the Jags in the match.
The Jaguars will return to action on Sept. 1 when they open a two-game New York City trip, beginning at Manhattan on Friday night. The trip will conclude at Wagner on Sunday (Sept. 3).
