EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's soccer team closed its daunting three-game preseason slate at Evansville on Sunday night (Aug. 20), falling to the high powered Purple Aces, 2-1 at Arad McCutchan Stadium. Junior
Jared O'Dell scored the Jaguars' goal late in the contest off a
Pedro Valladao assist. Redshirt freshman
Michael Buck, who collected a shutout three days prior, allowed a pair of first half scores in goal for the loss.
IUPUI faced a first half onslaught as the home standing Purple Aces outshot the Jaguars 11-0 before the break. UE's Arlick Ntabana put the hosts on top in the 15th minute off a Caleb Williams assist and the lead grew to 2-0 in the 26th minute. This time, the team's top returning scorer and All-America candidate Ian McGrath got a shot past Buck after he received a pass from Zac Blaydes.
IUPUI didn't register a shot until the 55th minute when freshman
Cameron Petersen fired an attempt wide of target. However, the second half was played much more evenly, with both sides getting five shot attempts.
The Jaguars broke up the shutout bid in the final minute as O'Dell capitalized on Valladao's corner kick to slip a shot past UE goalkeeper Matthew Bryant. It was the Jaguars' lone shot on goal as neither UE starter Matthew Keller or Bryant was credited with a save on Sunday night.
Buck made three saves at the other end as 11 of UE's 16 shot attempts were off target.
IUPUI will officially open the regular season next Saturday night (Aug. 26) when the Jaguars face Bowling Green at 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium. Live stats will be available via IUPUIJags.com at kickoff and a full recap and coverage will be available online afterwards.
