INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI's final tune-up for the regular season saw the Jags cruise to a 106-42 win over Urbana on Thursday (Nov. 2).
The Jags had five players score in double-figures with freshman
Morgan Allen leading the way with 15. Sophomore
Taylor Drake added 13 points, followed by
Danielle Lawrence and
Macee Williams each with 12 and
Sydney Roule finished with 11, including a team-high three threes. In fact, every Jag on the roster scored a point as head coach Austin Parkinson got a good look at his bench in the win.
IUPUI dominated down low outscoring Urbana 66-12 in the paint and 21-8 in second chance points. The Jags shot 56.2 percent from the field while holding the Blue Knights to 32 percent.
The Jags used a strong pressuring defense to generate a lot of offense finishing with 20 steals and forcing 30 turnovers, then turning those turnovers in to 38 points, including 19 in the first quarter. Generating the turnovers helped IUPUI outscore Urbana 26-3 in fast break points.
The starters played limited minutes with the bench giving IUPUI 65 points. Besides Lawrence and Williams,
Tamya Sims and
Sydney Hall each had six, while
Jenna Gunn posted five. Off the bench,
Holly Hoopingarner had nine points,
Agatha Beier had eight and
Allex Brown had seven.
Brown and Sims led the way on the boards for the Jags with six rebounds apiece. Beier led the Jags with four steals on a night where the Jags had nine players get steals. Williams and Roule each had three steals on the night.
The struggle for the Jags on the night came from outside of the arc. IUPUI only shot 31.6 percent from three-point land, going six-for-19.
Things got started quickly for the Jags, who jumped out to a 14-2 lead with the run capped by a layup from
Macee Williams. IUPUI dominated inside as 10 of the Jags' first 14 points came in the paint. The defense then went on lockdown against the Blue Knights forcing 12 turnover and grabbing nine steals. The strong defense led IUPUI on a 13-0 run to end the quarter and give the Jags a 33-7 lead.
The pressure continued in to the second quarter as the Jags increased their lead to 36 at 47-11 after a layup from
Tamya Sims. Coming off of shooting 70% in the first quarter, the Jags offense slowed a little bit only shooting 47.4% from the field in the second quarter and scoring 25 points to take a 58-15 lead in to the half.
IUPUI began the second half with more pressure as Williams had two layups,
Sydney Hall got on the board with her first bucket and Lawrence's layup capped an 8-0 run to start the half and increase the lead to 66-15. The Jags used a 12-0 run later in the quarter, featuring threes from Hoopingarner and Brown and finished off by a
Brittany Welch layup to go up 78-16. A three from Hall gave IUPUI its biggest lead of the night at that point, going up 83-19.
Taylor Drake got the Jags on the board 12 second in to the fourth quarter hitting one-of-two free throws. IUPUI kept feeding Drake as she scored the next six points on three layups. The Jags crossed the 100-point mark with the hot hand of
Sydney Roule. Roule hit back-to-back threes from the left wing to give IUPUI a 104-35 lead.
