INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI Lady Jags return to The Jungle on Friday (Nov. 17) to take on in-state foe Indiana State. The Jags are looking for their first 3-0 start to a season since 1996.
IUPUI (2-0) is coming off of an 85-52 win over Georgetown (Ky.) on Monday (Nov. 13). The Jags had an extremely balanced attack in the win over the Tigers with 10 players finishing with at least six points. For the second game in a row, junior
Sydney Hall led the Jags in scoring, pouring in 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting and going 3-for-6 from three. IUPUI dominated in the paint scoring 54 points and also had a 22-2 advantage in second-chance points.
The defense for the Jags forced 25 turnovers leading to 31 points and finished the night with 17 steals, led by six from
Jenna Gunn. The Jags have now finished with double-digit steals in both games this season, notching 11 in the win over Northern Iowa to start the season. The last time the Jags had double-digit steals in two-straight games was last year against Fort Wayne (12) and Omaha (11) on Jan. 28 and Feb 2. The last time the Jags had at least 17 steals in a game was on Dec. 11, 2014 in a game against IU-Kokomo when IUPUI finished with 17 swipes.
WNIT BANNER – IUPUI will celebrate the 2016-17 team that reached the WNIT by unveiling the team's 2017 WNIT banner before the game against Indiana State. The 2016-17 squad finished with a school record 24 wins and finished 24-9 overall. The Jags also tied its best conference mark going 12-4 and posted the best home record (13-2) in school history as well. It was the second-straight season the IUPUI made the WNIT.
PAW'S PANTRY – The IUPUI women's basketball team will be partnering with Paw's Pantry for a campus-wide effort for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Fans can get a $5 discount on a ticket with the donation of a can of non-perishable food.
HORIZON LEAGUE HONORS – Freshman Macee Williams was named Horizon League Freshman of the Week on Monday (Nov. 13) after her performance against Northern Iowa. Williams finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, three steals and a block against the Panthers. Against Georgetown, Williams finished with seven points and five rebounds.
SCOUTING INDIANA STATE – Indiana State (0-1) began its season with a loss at Saint Louis, 60-59. The Sycamores were led by Ashley Taia who finished with 22 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including 3-for-4 from deep and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Wendi Bibbins also finished in double-figures, scoring 14. Regan Wentland was the leading rebounder for Indiana State, pulling down 10 boards to go along with nine points.
QUOTABLE – "Indiana State is an athletic team that takes pride on the defensive end," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "It seems like every year our games go down to the last few minutes before it is decided. We look forward to being back home and playing in The Jungle."
ALL-TIME SERIES – Indiana State holds the all-time series lead 9-5 over the Jags but IUPUI has won four of the last five meetings with the Sycamores. The Jags have won the last two meetings in the series with a 68-43 win in Indianapolis in 2015 and a 45-34 win in Terre Haute last season.
NEXT TIME OUT – The Jags will hit the road for a Florida Thanksgiving. IUPUI will participate in the UCF Thanksgiving Classic with a game against host UCF on Saturday (Nov. 25) at 2:30 p.m. and will conclude play in the event on Sunday (Nov. 26) with an 11 a.m. matchup against Wyoming. Â
