YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Lipka dialed up her school record ninth shutout of the season and senior midfielder Hayley Shelton posted a goal and an assist as the Jaguars extended the nation's second-longest winning streak to 10, defeating Youngstown State 2-0 on Friday night (Oct. 7). IUPUI remained perfect in Horizon League play at 5-0 while Youngstown State dipped to 4-9-1 overall and 0-5 in league play.

Shelton staked the Jaguars (11-3, 5-0) to an early 1-0 lead with her fourth goal of the year in the game's eighth minute. Senior Krissy Kirkhoff put an initial attempt on frame that was deflected by YSU goalkeeper Kylee Moffett, which allowed Shelton to tally via the rebound.

Kirkhoff took sole possession of the program's all-time lead in assists with 18, albeit briefly. That's because Shelton pulled even in that category in the 33rd minute when she delivered a free kick to junior Jessica Flores, who headed a shot past Moffett for her third tally in as many games. After going nearly 50 games without a goal to start her career, Flores has tallied in the Jaguars' most recent three matches and is now third on the team in shot attempts this season.

After a slow start, IUPUI finished with a 13-8 shot advantage, fueled by Kirkhoff's four attempts.

Shelton moved atop the Horizon League standings with 11 points in five league games and netted her second game-winner of the season.

"Coming into the game, we knew what we needed to do," Shelton said. "We wanted to put the ball on the turf and move it quickly. We came out and executed the game plan. It was a great game all around. We capitalized on our opportunities and our defense came up big with another shutout. This was a true team effort all over the field."

The defense remained stingy and stout, posting a fourth shutout in Horizon League play and the ninth overall this season. Lipka made three first half saves as YSU outshot the Jags 8-5 before the break.

"After a little bit of pressure in the first half, my defense cleaned it up in the second half with no shots on goal," Lipka said. "It feels great to get another shutout. I owe a lot of that to my defense. It was a team effort today and I'm thankful to be in goal behind them all."

Freshman Natalie McNally played all 90 minutes in the defensive third while Becca Spitalniak and Morgan Rymer also had superb efforts. Rymer continues to play a key role in the defensive midfield as senior Sarah Jacobs recovers from injury.

Marissa Martin led YSU with two shot attempts while Moffett made four saves in the Penguins' loss.

The win moved the Jaguars within two victories of matched the program's all-time record of 12 straight, set during the 2009 season that resulted in the program's lone NCAA Tournament berth. However, that squad only recorded eight shutouts for the season, but had a penchant for scoring goals in bunches.

IUPUI improved to 7-0 all-time against YSU as the two schools were formerly conference foes in the Mid-Continent Conference/Summit League.

Johnson's squad will kickoff a two-game homestand on Friday night (Oct. 13) when the Jaguars host Wright State at 7:00 p.m.. That match will be aired on ESPN3 and adult tickets are just $5. That game is one of just three home games left during the regular season.
