PEORIA, Ill. - The IUPUI women's cross country team put up a representative effort at the Bradley 'Pink' Classic on Friday afternoon (Oct. 13), finishing 16th of 31 teams at the Newman Golf Course in Peoria. Friday's race was the squad's first 6K competition of the year as sophomore #Katelyn Murphy# and senior #Kelsey Tyler# led the way.

"This was our first 6K of the season and it was fun to see how we matched up compared to our new conference competitors. A few of our girls have been sick this past week, so it was difficult for them to give 110 percent. Kelsey had an amazing race and a huge PR. We are all so proud of her! I'm excited for our first race as Horizon League members in a few weeks. Once we have everyone back healthy, I'm beyond excited to see what this Jag pack will and can accomplish," Murphy said.

Murphy finished 33rd of 247 runners in a personal best time of 21:47.5, putting her seventh on the program's all-time list. Her time cleared her previous best by 25 seconds. Behind her, Tyler ran a time of 22:07.2 to place 51st overall and beat her previous best by 41 seconds.

"I had a really controlled start. We had an outside box so I didn't really get pushed around for the first 1K. My main goal was just to go hard and beat people and I feel like I did that. I was relaxed today and I think that was a great preparation for the mindset I need to have at conference in a couple weeks," Tyler said.

Sophomore #Shelby Pake# also notched a new PR, running a time of 22:29.8 to place 88th to beat her previous best by 13 seconds. Illinois-native #Janine Orvis# ran her first collegiate 6K in a time of 23:19.3 to finish 157th and junior #Ashley Kidwell# capped the scoring five at 23:26.7, placing 164th.

Senior #Haley Welch# (168th - 23:28.0) and sophomore #Jessica Backherms# (180th - 23:38.0) were just off her pace. Welch beat her previous best time by seven seconds while Kidwell dropped 15 seconds off her PR.

In the open race earlier in the day, true freshman #Paige Boatright# paced the Jaguars' two entries with a time of 23:29.8, placing 17th of 114 runners.

IUPUI will run the Horizon League Championships on Oct. 28, 2017 in Rochester, Mich.
