FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IUPUI basketball team's recent doldrums continued as the Jaguars were throttled at Fort Wayne, 103-73 on Wednesday night (Jan. 25). The loss was the Jaguars' second straight and dropped IUPUI to 3-5 at the midpoint of Summit League play. Fort Wayne improved to 15-7 overall and 4-4 in The Summit.
Sophomore John Konchar led five Fort Wayne players in double-digits with 19 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Kason Harrell added 16 points and Jordon King tallied a career-high 15 for the victors.
Aaron Brennan,
Evan Hall,
Ron Patterson and
T.J. Henderson all scored a team-high 11 points for the Jaguars.
IUPUI built a quick 4-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game on a pair of Hall buckets, but Fort Wayne used the arc to spark their offense and a 12-0 run to seize command early. The Jags got back within three at 12-9 when Brennan splashed a wing three, but the hosts had their way with the Jags in the opening 20 minutes, hitting 53 percent from the field in building a 48-32 advantage at the break.
However, Fort Wayne was just getting started as the lead ballooned early in the second half as Konchar seemingly ran circles around the Jags' defense. He spotted DeAngelo Stewart for back-to-back corner threes as the lead ultimately swelled beyond 30.
The hosts finished the game at 58 percent overall and 13-of-30 (43.3 percent) from three-point range. IUPUI closed at 44 percent overall and a respectable 8-of-20 (40 percent) from deep.
"They're a really good basketball team, especially at home," IUPUI Head Coach
Jason Gardner said. "Offensively, they're a really tough matchup at every position and they kind of did whatever they wanted against us tonight.
"Coach Coffman does a really good job and we saw it first-hand tonight. They threw the first punch tonight and we never really responded. It's hard to win on the road when you aren't as aggressive as you need to be."
IUPUI was hindered by the turnover bug, giving the ball up 20 times, leading to 26 Fort Wayne points. The 'Dons collected 13 steals as nine different IUPUI players had at least one turnover.
IUPUI's top scorer,
Darell Combs, was held to seven points, six boards and five assists while
Matt O'Leary closed with nine points and four boards. Fort Wayne's top scorer coming in, Mo Evans, finished with 13 points and seven assists and was limited to just 19 minutes due to foul trouble.
Eight different Fort Wayne players made at least one trey as the 13 threes were the most by an IUPUI foe this season.
IUPUI will continue the two-game road swing on Saturday (Jan. 28) when the Jaguars take on Western Illinois inside Western Hall at 7:00 p.m. Central (8:00 Eastern). That game will be aired on ESPN3 and can be heard in Central Indiana on 97.5 Fox Sports FM, 1260 WNDE and the iHeartRadio app as Morgan Adcock (pxp) is on the call.
