NORMAL, Ill. - The IUPUI women's soccer team fell into a three-goal hole and never rebounded as the Jaguars capped the non-conference slate with a 4-1 loss at Illinois State on Sunday (Sept. 25). Senior
Catherine Raster accounted for IUPUI's only offense with an unassisted goal late in the first half.
The loss snapped the Jaguars' modest two-game winning streak while Illinois State improved to 6-5-1 on the year. Both Mikayla Unger and Lauren Koehl scored a pair of goals for the victors while ISU's Kiley Czerwinski finished with two assists.
The host Redbirds went ahead in the game's seventh minute when Koehl setup Unger's first goal of the game against IUPUI rookie goalkeeper
Sophia Lipka. Koehl made it 2-0 when she finished a Czerwinski assist in the 17th minute, which was ultimately the game-winner. Illinois State made it 3-0 in the 29th minute when Unger dribbled up the left side and angled a shot past Lipka.
IUPUI had a quick answer when Raster netted her team-high sixth goal of the year in the 30th minute, just ahead of a thunderstorm that halted play for more than 75 minutes.
Illinois State continued to pile on at the start of the second half against junior goalie
Catherine Schmidt when Koehl headed home some insurance in the 49th minute.
IUPUI was unable to muster much offensively, being outshot 16-6 overall and 9-3 in shots on goal. Illinois State also finished with a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior
Hayley Shelton led the IUPUI attack with a pair of shot attempts while Lipka finished her 45 minutes with one save. Lipka dropped to 3-1 on the year while Schmidt recorded four second half saves.
