HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The IUPUI women's soccer team earned a solid result with a 2-2 double overtime draw at Marshall on Friday night (Sept. 2). Seniors
Tori Minnich and
Sierra Bryant tallied goals and reigning Summit League Offensive Player of the Week
Hayley Shelton,
Maryna Clark and
Alyssa Fox earned assists.
"It was a fantastic physical effort from our ladies," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "They were more athletic than we were and had some girls that could really fly. I was proud of how we came out and took it to them in the early going and took advantage of some scoring chances.
"I thought we could've been a little smarter and showed a little more maturity once we had the lead. That said, I'm extremely proud of the effort and proud of our ladies to get a tough result on the road."
IUPUI (3-1-1) went ahead in the fifth minute on Minnich's team-high fourth goal of the season, thanks to assists from Shelton and Clark. Junior
Sarah Jacobs played a long restart into dangerous territory to Clark, who headed the ball into the penalty area. From there, Shelton tapped a pass to Minnich, who was able to get a shot over the endline.
The Jags pushed out to a 2-0 lead in the 16th minute when Bryant scored, thanks to a pass from Fox. It was a bit of redemption for Bryant, who suffered a season-ending injury against Marshall last season.
It was her second goal in IUPUI's past three games after starting her collegiate career without a goal in 63 contests.
However, Marshall (1-2-1) got even before halftime, tallying in the 34th and 39th minutes. Jayne Lawman and Sydney Arnold both scored their first goals of the year for the Herd.
"I thought we did a good job of creating chances," Johnson said. "We obviously scored the two in the first half and had three pretty good scoring chances in the second half and another in overtime."
Minnich led the IUPUI attack with three shot attempts while junior
Catherine Schmidt collected five saves in 110 minutes of work. Marshall goalie Emily Moreland collected three saves at the other end.
The Jags will cap the two-game trip on Sunday when they face VMI at 1:00 p.m..
