INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team yielded three first half goals and never got off the ground offensively as the Jags were tripped up at Butler, 3-0. The host Bulldogs improved to 6-2-1 on the season while IUPUI dipped to 4-3-1 in non-league play.
Butler's Serina Kashimoto broke open the scoring in the 14th minute with a left-footed strike from just outside the penalty area. IUPUI held firm until the 37th minute when the hosts connected again. This time, Gabrielle Lemkuil was nestled near the back post after junior goalie
Catherine Schmidt tipped a cross away amidst a crowded six-yard box. The ball came to Lemkuil, who had her shot deflect off a defender and over Schmidt for the game's second score.
Less than five minutes later, Halle Stelbasky made it 3-0 before halftime when she slid a shot inside the far post off a slide lead pass from Kashimoto. Schmidt closed the first half by staving off a flurry, beginning by knocking down a header attempt and then going to the ground to smother a rebound try from point blank range.Â
The IUPUI attack struggled to muster much in the second half as well and was limited to just eight shots for the match, putting only one on frame. Senior
Tori Minnich had a pair of attempts early in the half and junior back
Leia Peterman had a clean look from distance late in the match, but hit the shot high of target. Butler closed with a 21-8 shot advantage and 7-3 edge in corner kicks.Â
At the other end, freshman goalie
Sophia Lipka had a superb second half, making three saves in a clean 45 minutes. In doing so, she extended her personal scoreless streak to 106-plus minutes to start her collegiate career. Schmidt closed her half with five saves before giving way to Lipka at the break. Â
Minnich, Peterman and
Catherine Raster led IUPUI with a team-high two shot attempts while Paige Monaghan had six shots, three on frame.
IUPUI will open a two-game homestand on Friday night (Sept. 16) when the Jaguars host Evansville at 7:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Students are admitted for FREE with a valid JagTag and adult tickets are just $5 at the Carroll Stadium box office.
